Doing so will assist the brain in remembering info as its needed.
- Workout your mind. The brain is a muscle and needs exercise similar to the rest of the body. Chess, reading out loud, even brushing your teeth are all ways to exercise your mind, experts say. Online games that specialize in mind fitness are valuable resources, too. There?s no guarantee that digital games will prevent memory loss, but they can?t hurt. Find one or two that don?t require a fee and that promise to increase mental agility.
- Eat your fruits and veggies. Variety is the spice of life, especially when it applies to consuming a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and spinach are a few excellent examples that also contain those all-important antioxidants. Plus, eating several servings per day assists in preventing those nasty free-radicals from injuring cells.
- Drink a little vino. You?ll receive a two-fold advantage with this one as it helps the heart and the mind. Drinking small amounts of wine may also decrease the advancement of dementia in seniors who have experienced a slight decline in brain power already. As long as this doesn?t interfere with sleep patterns, drink up...in moderation, of course!
- Good old physical fitness. As noted earlier, working out your mind is just as important as working out your body. You don?t have to exercise with an extreme fitness program or purchase a gym membership to experience results, either. Something as simple as walking several days per week will provide significant benefits to memory health after only a few months of this activity. So, put on your walking shoes and get started today. Your heart and your brain will thank you.
There?s no magic pill to supercharge brain power. If there were, the pharmaceutical industry would have already created it. Nor will you develop the type of memorization you had as a youngster.
But applying these techniques will do wonders in preventing further memory decline, now and in the future.

Egypt's president heads to Turkey to build emerging alliance of moderate Islamist governments
CAIRO - Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi travels to Turkey on Sunday to strengthen an emerging alliance between two moderate Islamist governments in a region beset by conflict and instability.
Even though Morsi has only been in power for a few months, there are already strong signs a partnership with Turkey is forming, evidenced by a common effort to end Syria's civil war by urging the exit of President Bashar Assad from power.
Earlier this month, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the Egyptian capital Cairo and pledged $2 billion in aid to boost confidence in an economy badly battered by a tourism slump, strikes and ongoing protests since the fall of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak in an uprising last year.
During the 12-hour visit, Morsi will try to strengthen economic ties with Turkey ? a country his Muslim Brotherhood group views as an Islamist success story, mixing a strong economy with Western ties and Islamic piety.
Turkey, a NATO member with a mostly Muslim, but not Arab, population, has been touted as a democratic model for Egypt and other Arab countries swept up in popular revolts over the past two years.
After initially looking to the Turkish ruling party as a role model, the Islamic fundamentalist Brotherhood in Egypt has cooled to the idea because of Turkey's strong secular leanings. Morsi and the Brotherhood, on the contrary, have been criticized by their opponents for pushing a more conservative Islamist line, particularly in drafting the country's new constitution.
"Before the revolution, we saw (Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip) Erdogan's regime ... as a successful model that can be emulated," said Dina Zakaria, a member of the foreign relations committee of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party. "But can it be with all its details and can it all suit Egyptian society? Of course not."
Turkish officials and media have voiced enthusiasm for the relationship with Cairo after the uprising. Turkish President Abdullah Gul was the first foreign leader to visit Egypt after Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011, meeting with both the largely liberal and secular youth groups that spearheaded the pro-democracy revolt as well as with generals from the ruling military council who took over from Mubarak and then eventually transferred power to the democratically elected Morsi.
Erdogan got a warm welcome in Cairo last year, with crowds of Brotherhood supporters lining the airport road upon his arrival, some of them carrying banners reading: "Erdogan is a hero."
Erdogan has encouraged Egypt to mimic the Turkish model of governance.
But Zakaria said that after frequent visits to Turkey and meetings with different groups there, she is convinced Egyptian society would not accept Turkey's secular constitution.
Many in conservative Egypt equate the term secularism with "anti-Islam." As efforts to draft the country's constitution are marred by disputes over what many liberals perceive as overtly Islamist clauses in the charter, Zakaria ruled out drawing inspiration from the Turkish constitution.
"Their constitution won't work here in Egypt," she said. "There are things Egyptian people won't accept," she added, referring mainly to the separation of religion and he state.
One of the founding principles of Turkey's constitution is that it is a secular democracy, something that contradicts Egypt's old constitution, and is not even considered in the writing of the new charter. Debate remains in Egypt over whether to keep the current charter, which cites the principles of Islamic law as the basis of legislation, or to harden it to include a reference to specific Islamic laws which would guide all legislation.
But when it comes to foreign affairs and economics, there is much that Egypt can gain from Turkey's experience, Zakaria said.
Certainly on the international stage, Cairo and Ankara have much in common. Both want Assad of Syria to quit and Iran, his ally, to stay out of the civil war there. Ankara and Cairo have teamed as part of a regional initiative to try to solve the Syrian crisis, an effort that could form a strong foundation of future cooperation.
"Turkey couldn't do anything alone when it comes to Syria. One hand alone won't clap," Zakaria said. "What is clear now is that the two countries need to have strong relations because we have serious regional problems and we need each other."
Mustafa Ellabbad, an Egyptian expert on Turkish relations, said Turkey wants an Arab partner in its bid for regional influence in the Middle East and its affiliation with the Brotherhood would serve as a foundation for a moderate Islamist alliance. The Brotherhood, in return, looks to Turkey for assistance as a bridge to the West. But for some of Egypt's more radical Islamists, "the Turkish model doesn't even deserve to be labeled Islamic," Ellabbad said.
But Morsi could turn to Turkey for help on other domestic issues, chief among them the economy. He has already visited Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, China, Iran, Italy and Belgium before his recent trip to New York, where he addressed the U.N. General Assembly. His frequent travels have raised criticism that he is paying more attention to foreign policy issues than domestic problems. However, the economic issues appear high on the agenda on most of his foreign trips.
"The economic portfolio is certainly one of the most important ones between Egypt and Turkey," Yasser Ali, the presidential spokesman, said Saturday.
Egypt's economy is faltering under the weight of shrinking foreign investment and numerous labor strikes demanding better wages and representation in state-owned companies. The political system remains far from stable, and a referendum on a new constitution and new parliamentary elections that will follow that will test the performance of the Brotherhood's Islamist politics.
This is where Morsi may turn to Turkey for inspiration.
Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, or AKP, has had an extraordinary record of electoral success and longevity, coming to power in 2002 amid economic hardship and a fractured political landscape, and then comfortably winning general elections again in 2007 and 2011.
Zakaria could not confirm local media reports that the AKP provided assistance to the Brotherhood's political party ahead of Egypt's parliamentary elections last year. Brotherhood officials told Egyptian media that the party's local branch in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city, signed a partnership deal with the AKP in Istanbul, ahead of last winter's parliamentary elections.
Morsi is also expected to attend the annual congress of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party, a first for an Egyptian leader, and is invited to attend an economic forum organized by the Turkish chamber of commerce on Sunday.
Hassan Malek, a prominent businessman from the Muslim Brotherhood traveling to Turkey with Morsi, said there is much that Egypt can learn from Turkey in the fields of manufacturing, industry and trade zones. He said Egypt could particularly benefit in the fields of manufacturing apparel, and electronics.
Egypt's Minister of Economic Cooperation Ashraf el-Araby told local media that a committee at the level of prime ministers will be formed to push economic cooperation, including opening the African market for both countries. Trade between the two countries has already reached $3.8 billion in the first nine months of 2012, a 27 percent increase compared to the same period last year, said Turkey's ambassador to Egypt Hussein Awny. He estimated the figure could rise to reach $5 billion by the end of the year.
"It is not hidden that there is a meeting of minds. Geographically we are close, we have similar visions," Malek said. "This is a new opportunity. There are many things in the Turkish experience we can transfer and benefit from. But we can't copy everything."

The massive Tokyo Game show 2012 not only ended with a record attendance of 223,753 people, it also saw the release of new console games and other much-expected titles. However, the video game expo that showcased exhibits from 209 corporations and organizations from 19 different countries and regions revealed a trend towards smartphones and social gaming instead.
Amongst the usual names in gaming such as SEGA, Konami, Bandai Namco, CAPCOM, one of the expo?s largest exhibitors was GREE, Inc, a?Japanese Internet media company that houses one of the world?s largest mobile social gaming platform, reaching 169 countries. Speaking to Shino Tokimatsu, Global PR of GREE, she mentioned that unlike game consoles, smartphones?have greater and more extensive connectivity. Therefore, projects by GREE this year have been focusing more on bringing new and novel game experiences through hand held devices, such as War Corps.
Due for release next year, War Corps is the world?s first social third-person shooter game. Gamers enlist in one of three mighty factions?struggling for world domination and will be able to team up with your friends and wage war across major cities like New York, London and Tokyo. Other popular games that has been well received other than Japan include games such as Zombie Jombie in the United States, and Driland in Asia.
GREE?s?first expansion out of Japan was in January, 2011, in San Francisco. Since then, they have established 8 more offices in the globe. GREE is also planning on launching the GREE Global Platform in 14 different languages. This will enable their users from all over the world to utilize the GREE platform.
The Tokyo Game show this year also hosted a ?Asia New Stars Area? which welcomed eight corporations from Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia and Vietnam. It seems that indeed, the future of gaming is looking increasingly social, and not a fad or a bubble.

A recent CAPS homepage feature story revealed that in August five of the 10 states considered pivotal in the U.S. presidential election lost jobs. Unemployment increased in Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin. In the other five crucial states?Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, Florida and Virginia, the unemployment statistics either remained unchanged or increased fractionally. In the weeks leading up to November 6, there have been and will be so many polls offering so many different perspectives that they defy comprehensive analysis.
But one constant remains. Immigration?s adverse impact on American unemployment will be an unmentionable for the incumbent president Barack Obama and his challenger Mitt Romney. Even voters in Nevada, the nation?s? most beleaguered state with its 12.1 percent unemployment, will not hear a single word about immigration unless its boilerplate, debunked stuff about ?doing jobs Americans won?t.?
As?grim as the widely published Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment data is, the more telling U-6 rate is appalling.? The BLS defines U-6 as total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force.
For the swing states, the U-6 rate is Iowa (10.5 percent), New Hampshire (11.2), North Carolina (17.5), Wisconsin (13.3) and Nevada (22.1).
According to the U.S. Census Bureau?s latest data, Nevada?s Hispanic population is 27.1 percent. Any time a demographic representation is as high as Nevada?s, American workers will suffer. Many Americans would eagerly work in Nevada?s hospitality industry, if offered the opportunity.
A Center for Immigration Studies report found that from 2000 to 2010, all of the net employment gains went to immigrant (legal and illegal) workers. Fewer native-born workers were employed in 2010 than in 2000, despite a 13.5 million increase in native-born workers during that time. Despite all evidence which proves that adding nearly 1 million legal immigrants annually to the work force devastates Americans, immigration remains the third rail on the campaign trail.
Even the administration?s staunchest supporters paint a grim employment picture for years to come. Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich summed it up this way:
?Since the start of the Great Recession [through March, 2010], the economy has lost 8.4 million jobs and failed to create another 2.7 million needed just to keep up with population growth. That means we?re more than 11 million in the hole right now. And that hole keeps deepening every month we fail to add at least 150,000 new jobs, again reflecting population growth?.Bottom line: This is no jobs recovery.?
Perhaps the most curious thing about the candidates? failure to mention immigration is that mainstream Americans like the idea of limiting it. A CNN/ORC International poll found that 75 percent favor Arizona?s Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Law (SB 1070).
Nevertheless, Republicans and Democrats alike persist in their efforts to force more immigration onto struggling Americans.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? Al-Shabab rebels pulled out of a key port city in southern Somalia, the group said Saturday, a day after Kenyan troops invaded and marched toward the city center and seaside port that long served as the militants' key source of funding, officials said.
Residents in Kismayo said they woke to find police and government headquarters abandoned by the militants, sparking a looting spree of the government and police headquarters.
"They withdrew from here last night. The town is not under anyone's control now," Mohamed Hassan, a resident, said. "People feel some relief now. We hope no more fighting will take place."
The withdrawal came about 24 hours after Kenyan forces made a beach landing and as inland troops from Somalia and Kenya moved toward the port city from the west.
"Looting and chaos is going on here. Thugs are taking advantage of the vacuum," Maryan Hussein, another resident, said. "The abandoned houses are being ransacked and the streets are occupied by people carrying belongings."
Col. Cyrus Oguna, a spokesman for the Kenyan military, said five al-Shabab fighters were killed in a battle overnight. Two commanders were killed in the fighting, the military said.
He said the Kenyan forces are still verifying the reports that al-Shabab had pulled out of Kismayo. "For now we are treating it as a theory," he said.
The Kenyan troops landed by boats in the northern part of Kismayo on Friday and moved toward the port, he said. He said that al-Shabab lost "many, many militants, including some key commanders" during battles on Friday that involved helicopter gunships.
Al-Shabab used Twitter to announce the news it was leaving Kismayo.
"Last night, after more than 5 years the Islamic administration in Kismayo closed its office," the tweet said. "Kismayo shall be transformed from a peaceful city governed by Islamic Shari'ah into a battle-zone between Muslims" and invaders.
Al-Shabab found little popular support in Kismayo because of the conservative brand of Islam it tried to impose on residents. Al-Shabab carried out public executions, whippings and amputations as punishments, and enforced a conservative dress code.
Al-Shabab was forced out of Mogadishu in August 2011 and lost one of its major sources of funding when it could no longer tax businesses in the city's main market. Since then the taxes al-Shabab charged on goods coming into Kismayo's port were seen as its last major funding source.
As it no longer holds any major cities in Somalia, al-Shabab is expected to operate more as an insurgent force that carries out suicide and roadside bomb attacks.

Kids can't learn if they come to school hungry.? Poor kids hear fewer words said aloud and this makes reading more difficult.? The depressing effects of living a life in extreme poverty cannot be removed by curriculum adjustments.? Even if you accept standardized test scores as a measure, compare the scores of poor school districts to more affluent districts- guess who wins?
To really reform education in the United States, we need to address the problem of poverty.? The poverty rate in 2011 rose to 15.9% up from 15.3% the previous year.? Tasweek to outline strengths of UAE market at region's premier ...

Kodak plans to end consumer inkjet printer sales
NEW YORK (AP) ? Kodak said Friday that it plans to stop selling consumer inkjet printers and will eliminate 200 more jobs than previously projected as it requested more time to submit its framework for emerging from bankruptcy protection.
The Rochester, N.Y.-based company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in January, wants the court to extend the exclusivity period for the filing of its plan until Feb. 28. After the exclusivity period expires, creditors may file competing plans.
In the months since its filing, Eastman Kodak Co. has worked to reshape itself, selling off businesses, eliminating jobs and slashing other costs, with the goal of emerging from court protection in 2013.
Kodak said earlier this year that it would stop making digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames. Earlier this year, it sold Kodak Gallery, its online photo service business, to Shutterfly Inc. for $23.8 million.
In August, Kodak said that it was looking to sell its personalized imaging and document imaging businesses in order to focus on its printing and business services. Kodak's document imaging division makes scanners and offers related software and services. The personalized imaging business includes photo paper and still camera film products. It also offers souvenir photo products at theme parks and other venues.
The company also has been trying to sell off its collection of patents, but earlier this month it indefinitely postponed an auction of its imaging patent portfolios. The company said in court filings at the time that it was looking at other possibilities, including keeping the patents and creating a company to make money by licensing the technology.
On Friday, the company said it now plans to focus its consumer inkjet business on the sale of ink for its existing printers and start winding down sales of printers next year.
The move is in line with the company's goal of refocusing itself on commercial and packaging printing, along with other services, and is expected to significantly boost cash flow in the U.S. starting in the first half of 2013, Kodak said.
The company, whose workforce peaked at nearly 150,000 workers in 1988, has already cut 2,700 jobs this year. It originally planned to cut at least another 1,000 jobs, but boosted that figure to 1,200 on Friday.
Kodak said the 23 percent reduction in its employee ranks save the company more than $340 million per year and reduce its workforce to about 13,100 employees.
Kodak was founded in 1880, and it introduced the iconic Brownie camera in 1900, making hobby photography affordable for many people. Its Kodachrome film, introduced in 1935, became the first commercially successful amateur color film.
But the company has struggled in recent years, hurt by the shift toward digital photography and competition from Japanese companies such as Canon.
A hearing on the motion and other matters is scheduled for Oct. 17.

This is an astounding time capsule piece which demonstrates how truly far we've come in digital image quality, particularly just in the past few years. There are times where you'll go back and forth about how you feel, because ultimately, both sides make great points. I couldn't believe how terrible some of the earlier digital films looked (TADPOLE or CHUCK AND BUCK anyone?). This may feel really too inside baseball for the layperson, but if you have any interest in how we experience filmed stories, this is essential viewing.

Minneapolis shooting spree claims fifth victim
On Friday police removed the bodies of those killed in Thursday's carnage in Minneapolis, Minn., where an ex-employee at Accent Signage Systems opened fire killing five people. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

The fifth victim of?Thursday's shooting rampage at a Minneapolis sign company has died, police said Friday.?
The death brings the total number of those killed in the attack to six, including the suspected gunman, identified Friday as Andrew J. Engeldinger, 36, an employee who had just lost his job.
Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan said Engeldinger was brought into the front office at the end of the work day to be terminated, and then he took out a 9mm Glock semiautomatic pistol and began shooting, the StarTribune reported. Engeldinger then walked to the loading dock, killing others.
Dolan said that earlier reports that Engeldinger had been terminated earlier in the day, and then returned to the office for the shooting were incorrect.
Asked if Engeldinger chose his victims, the chief said: "It's clear he did walk by some people, he did walk by people to get to certain other members of the business."
Dolan said Engeldinger was found dead in the basement of Accent Signage Systems with the semiautomatic weapon and a single bullet casing, NBC station KARE of Minneapolis?reported.
Among the five victims was Reuven Rahamim, the founder of the company, and UPS driver Keith Basinski, 50, who apparently had been on a delivery when the shooting started.?
Other victims were identified Friday by the Hennepin County Medical Examiners office as Rami Cooks, 62; Ronald Edberg, 58;?and Jacob Beneke, 34, the Tribune reported.
Three men were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition after the shooting, which was reported at 4:35 p.m. CDT (5.35 p.m. EDT) Thursday. News that one of these victims had died came late Friday afternoon.
Accent Signage is the only manufacturing business located among the mix of single-family homes and parks in that tree-lined section of the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis.
"In a great neighborhood and a great business; we have a horrible tragedy," Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said Thursday night.
Accent Signage is known for a process of making interior signs with durable Braille text lettering. It was founded by Rahamim, an Israeli immigrant, from his basement. It?grew to have 28 employees and an expected revenue of $5 million to $10 million this year, according to the publication Finance & Commerce.
"Reuven was so proud of everything that he and his family have built in this country, and he had a right to be," Rybak said Friday in a Facebook posting.?
Dolan?said?police found packaging for 10,000 rounds of ammunition during a search of Engeldinger's home.
Barry Lawrence, a?former employee who told the Tribune that he had trained Engeldinger as an engraver?in 1998 or 1999, described him as "real intelligent, caught on fast."
"He seemed conscientious," said Lawrence. "He was conscious about saving money. He was always worried about his 401K plan. When the stock market went down, he was concerned about losing money. I said, 'Just forget about it, Andy, don't even look at if it upsets you.'"
Engeldinger's parents on Friday released a statement saying that Andrew struggled with mental illness for years and had lost contact with the family, KARE reported. "This is not an excuse for his actions, but sadly, may be a partial explanation," said the statement read by Carolyn and Chuck Engeldinger. They also expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wounded.
This followed an July mass shooting in a crowded cinema in Colorado and an attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August, which rekindled debate about gun control in the United States.
Nationally, there were 458 workplace homicides in 2011 and 518 in 2010, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
