Romney takes summer break before big campaign push

WOLFEBORO, N.H. (AP) ? It's a family tradition that spans a decade, as Mitt Romney's clan ? all 30 of them ? gathers at his New England lakeside compound for a week of home-cooked meals, sporting events and ice cream outings.

Only this summer, things are a little different: The patriarch is the Republican candidate challenging President Barack Obama and there's a Secret Service detail in tow everywhere Romney goes.

Nevertheless, the former Massachusetts governor is sticking to his routine. He attended Sunday church, let loose on Monday with a little jet skiing and on Monday night he was eating ice cream in town before piloting his boat back home to his lakefront estate. He walked barefoot with his grandchildren, posed for family photos, and visited with friends ? just as he has done every other summer. For Romney, this week is a welcome opportunity to unwind from the campaign trail while reflecting on the biggest decision he'll make during this campaign: choosing a running mate.

"It's just so nice to have everybody together," his wife, Ann, said after church on Sunday. "We never get to see them all anymore."

Her husband has been spending most of his time traveling the country raising money and campaigning against Obama. His wife and sons occasionally join him, but they keep separate campaign schedules of their own. This weeklong vacation will likely be the last real break Romney gets before the GOP convention in late August ? it's where he will accept his party's nomination ? kicks off the frenzied sprint to Election Day.

So he seems to be making the most of it.

Romney spent Monday morning lounging on the beach at the compound a few miles outside of Wolfeboro, N.H., as his grandchildren played in the sand. Then, he and his wife climbed on a jet ski on Lake Winnipesaukee. Ann drove one of the family Sea Doos while Romney sat behind her wearing a life preserver over a T-shirt, shrugging his shoulders and grinning at the reporters who trailed him in a pontoon boat. His Secret Service detail kept watch from a gray boat with enormous outboard engines.

In the evening, Romney and his clan took their two boats into town for some ice cream at Bailey's Bubble, an ice cream shop that's operated since at least the 1930s. Local residents snapped photos as several of the grandchildren posed in neon t-shirts from the shop, which has been operating for decades. His usually coifed hair windblown, a tanned, relaxed Romney then crossed Main Street back to his waiting boats.

"You all have your life jackets?" Romney asked the many grandchildren who climbed aboard before he untied the lines and drove the boat away from the town's public dock himself.

Romney's first trip to the tiny, centuries-old town of Wolfeboro ? decades ago, with his father, George Romney ? was to visit the family of hotel magnate J.W. Marriott, also longtime Wolfeboro vacationers. Sunday night, Nancy and Dick Marriott dropped by to visit the Romneys after fleeing a Washington home that was still without power after the weekend's storms.

Like the Romneys, the Marriotts are Mormons, and in the summer both families attend services at the same small, nondescript branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Only the Romneys attended the service Sunday, with their family making up nearly a third of the congregation.

Romney sat next to his wife, with grandchildren occupying the rest of the row. He sang along during the service's three hymns, holding his iPad underneath his navy blue hymnal. Some of the kids ? they range in age from a few weeks old to 16 years ? grew restless during the long service. At different points, several walked over to receive a kind smile and quiet word from their grandfather. At one point, Romney took charge of a bag of colored cereal, offering the food to a grinning blond toddler.

After the service's first hour, some of the children headed home ? but not Mitt and Ann Romney. They stayed for at least part if not all of the two additional hours of meeting time after the sacrament service, which offers bread and water instead of bread and wine. That's a variation of the communion service that allows for the Mormon prohibition against alcohol.

The church service aside, Romney's newly heightened political status threatens to transform Wolfeboro, a quaint, classic resort town of about 6,000 people.

Small restaurants, clothing stores and ice cream shops ? some, they say, in operation for a century or more ? line Main Street, where during the summer the traffic backs up past the grocery store where Romney sometimes shops. If it becomes a presidential summer destination, it could face the same development and crowding issues that have confronted Kennebunkport, Maine, where President George H.W. Bush's family has a compound.

In past years, Romney has gone running by himself down the private driveway that leads to his 6,700-square-foot, six-bedroom home. The home and the 2.2 acres it sits on are worth $3.5 million; the surrounding land the Romneys have purchased, as well as the boat garage, are worth millions more. The house is easily seen from the water of Lake Winnipesaukee, with a side facing the lake and lounge chairs lined up along the beach.

The candidate keeps a 29-foot Sea Ray boat in the enormous three-boat garage outside of his lakefront estate. He also has a small Boston Whaler, two of the Sea Doo water skis and a Malibu water ski boat. In past summers, he's been spotted water skiing on the lake.

Perhaps the only sign that something's different this summer is the security. Law enforcement boats are parked just off the compound's beach. A Secret Service agent sat quietly behind the family in church on Sunday. And, when Romney travels to town, instead of riding a bicycle, he's in a black SUV flanked by security cars.

This year, questions about whom Romney will choose as his vice presidential running mate hang over his vacation.

The Republican National Convention is drawing closer, and Republicans are speculating that the candidate may be spending part of his summer meeting with potential vice presidential running mates.

Fueling the talk is the fact that Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, whom many observers consider a top contender, will be in New Hampshire next weekend for a Republican fundraiser in Concord. Another potential running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, has visited the house before: He and his wife shared a meal with the Romneys before Pawlenty endorsed his former rival's presidential bid.

For now, there's a sense of normalcy to this vacation.

On Sunday evening, Romney sat with two of his sons on the deck above the lawn on the back of the house, relaxing while his eldest son, Tagg, held one of his twins in his arms. Golf carts ferried family members up the hill and past the boat house, and just one or two Secret Service agents were visible through the trees.

No matter who wins in November, it will be different next summer.

New way to grow, isolate cancer cells may add weapon against disease

ScienceDaily (July 2, 2012) ? The news a cancer patient most fears is that the disease has spread and become much more difficult to treat. A new method to isolate and grow the most dangerous cancer cells could enable new research into how cancer spreads and, ultimately, how to fight it.

University of Illinois researchers, in collaboration with scientists at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, published their results in the journal Nature Materials.

"This may open the door for understanding and blocking metastatic colonization, the most devastating step in cancer progression," said Ning Wang, a professor of mechanical science and engineering who co-led the study.

The most dangerous cancer cells are the ones that can break away from the primary tumor and travel through the body to form a new tumor in another tissue, a process called metastasis. Fortunately, only a small percentage of cancer cells have the ability to become new tumors. Unfortunately, the tumor-seeding cells are the ones hardest to kill with chemotherapy -- and it only takes a lone survivor to mount a resurgence.

Cancer researchers have theorized that these elusive tumor-spreading cells may be responsible for recurrences after surgery or treatment. They are very interested in studying these cells in hopes of better understanding and ultimately combating them. However, identifying and isolating metastatic cells from a general cancer cell population is very difficult.

One hotly debated question is whether metastatic cells share characteristics of stem cells, and if so, to what extent. Some studies have found cancer cells with stem-cell markers, others have displayed stem-cell-like behavior, and yet others have suggested that cells can spontaneously switch from a primary cancer cell to a stem-cell-like cancer cell and back.

Wang's group at the U. of I. had previously found that stem cells grow better in a soft gel than on a rigid plate. They wondered if this principle would also apply to cancer-spreading cells, since they share some other qualities of stem cells. So they suspended single cells of mouse melanoma, a type of skin cancer, in soft gel made of fibrin, a fiber-like protein found throughout the body. They cultured the cells into colonies and compared them with those grown on a stiff flat surface, the traditional method used by cancer researchers.

After five days, the soft gels were riddled with spheres of soft cells, many more colonies than grew on the harder surface. In addition, the cells were softer and grew in spherical clumps -- unusual for most cancer cells, but signature characteristics of stem cells.

"Starting from single cells, by day five, you have more cells in the soft substrate proliferating," Wang said. "This is exactly the opposite from most cancer cells, which prefer a stiffer substrate. But these cells like to grow in the soft environment. Why is this important? Because they turn into tumors."

The researchers found that the cells grown in the 3-D soft fibrin were much more efficient at causing tumors in mice than cells prepared traditionally. In fact, injecting as few as 10 cells from a culture grown in a soft gel was sufficient to induce tumors in a large percentage of mice, while 10,000 cells from a traditional culture are needed to achieve results with the same incidence of cancer. This suggests that, while a traditional culture of cells has only a few capable of starting new tumors, the soft substrate method is capable of isolating these cells and promoting the growth and multiplication of these cells in culture.

The researchers then tested their soft fibrin substrate with other cancer cell lines and found that they also formed stem-cell-like colonies of highly tumorigenic cells, showing that the process is generalizable for many types of cancer. The cells grown in a soft gel even caused tumors in normal mice, called "wild-type," rather than only the immune-compromised mice typically needed for such studies.

The researchers also found that the tumor-repopulating cells express a self-renewal gene called Sox2, which is usually only expressed in stem cells and not in traditionally prepared cancer cells. When the researchers blocked the Sox2 gene, the cells started to differentiate, becoming traditional tissue-specific cancer cells.

Now, the researchers will continue exploring the molecular mechanisms that make these tumor-seeding cells so good at surviving in distant organs and so efficient at seeding tumors. They hope that knowledge will contribute to treatments to stop the spread of cancer.

"Since these cells are more resistant to current cancer-killing drugs than differentiated cancer cells, we would like to see if there are ways to identify and develop new molecules and methods that can specifically target and kill these cells," Wang said.

PST: Spain has chance to be greatest of all time

source: Getty Images

How We?ll Remember ?

Spain 4, Italy 0 - As the signature performance of Spain?s dynastic run.

Having won their previous finals 1-0 (versus Germany in 2008; versus the Netherlands in 2010),?La Roja had provided too much fuel for detractors. Now, after a tournament where Spain?s passive aggression wasput on trial, the best international team of our time provided an?irresistible?closing argument.

Facing Italy for the second time in three weeks, there was no reason for caution. Spain knew what to expect, and they exploited it, posting the most lopsided win in European finals? history.

Crystal Ball: What Needs to Happen, Going Forward

If Spain can defending their world title with a win in Brazil, they?ll be no argument as to who?s the best team of all-time. A European squad winning a World Cup in South America would be impressive on its own, but for Spain to do so on the back of three consecutive major titles would be provide an inscrutable claim to greatness.

The team will likely need adjustments ahead of 2014. Winning this title, they?ve discovered they can win without Carles Puyol and David Villa. Villa should be back for Brazil, but Xavi Hern?ndez will be 34. Xabi Alonso will be 32. Both players will go through two more years of grueling club soccer for Barcelona and Real Madrid. Come Brazil, Spain will need backup plans, if not outright replacements.

Italy?s obstacles are more daunting. Of their major contributors, only Mario Balotelli (21) is under 25 years old. The rest of their regulars are already in the prime of their careers, with a handful likely to lose effectiveness before the 2014 World Cup.

For a team that won only two of six matches in the tournament, it?s incredibly discouraging. Though they?ve made this final, there isn?t much margin for error. Grouped with Denmark and the Czech Republic in World Cup qualifying, Italy can?t afford to regress.

But with Euro 2012?s success, head coach Cesare Prandelli has solved one problem. He?s reestablished an identity for the Azzurri, on that involves more than just waiting for their opponents to screw up. But the lingering issue, one which may be out of his control: Italy?s not actually?producing?any players. Come 2014, Italy may have no choice but to take another recycled team into a World Cup.

PST Player of the Tournament

source:

For the third straight championship, there was no true stand out player, with voters left to pick greatness from a number of good candidates. Andrea Pirlo, however, fits a number of different definitions of best player. In terms of absolute quality, he heads the discussion. He was also the most valuable player to a competitive team, and with Italy making the final, his value was part of a team important to the competition. And if you?re looking for an emotional angle, Pirlo sustaining his resurgent club success helped revitalize a world power.

For us, he was simply the tournament?s best player, and although Xavi Hern?ndez?s final performance gave 2008?s top performer a late push, Andrea Pirlo gets our nod.

Storm knocks Netflix, Instagram, Pinterest offline

By Bob Sullivan

Normally, bad weather on a Friday night is a good excuse to stay home and watch a movie, but not this week. Friday night's quick-moving thunderstorms hit several states from Indiana to Maryland, but the storm's impact was felt around the Web.

The storm, which packed winds of up to 90 mph, knocked out power to millions of homes -- and to some of Amazon's Cloud services in Northern Virginia. That took Netflix offline.? Web users who went hunting for other distractions found even more frustration, as Pinterest.com was also knocked offline, and the Instagram photo-sharing service wasn't working either.

At 1:15 a.m. ET, Pinterest.com posted a simple message: "We'll be back soon." And, in a message of its Twitter account at about 1:45 a.m. ET, it said, "We're back! Our team is continuing to work on some remaining issues that may impact performance. Thanks for your patience and happy pinning!"

?

?

Amazon's Cloud services status page was full of power-related error messages. Amazon's ElastiCache, for example, indicated that starting at 8:43 p.m., the service was "affected by a power event."? At 9:25 p.m., this message was posted: "We can confirm that a large number of cache clusters are impaired. We are actively working on recovering them."

Netflix users took to Twitter to air their disbelief at the service outage.

"Netflix isn't working on possibly the most emotional night of my life. It's official ... this is NOT real life," wrote one Twitter user.?

"Everything good is down," complained another.

Neither Netflix nor Amazon can be blamed for Mother Nature's ferocious attack. The storm, which swept through Virginia and Maryland during a harrowing two-hour stretch, uprooted trees across the region, closed roads and damaged homes, and is currently blamed for at least one death.
