PPC Ads That Convert & Your CTR

One of my most favorite ways to grow our list, build a big client base and impact the world is through PPC Pay Per Click Marketing. With today's online tools you can strategize exactly where you want your ad to be seen and put it in front of people who are perfectly targeted for what you offer.

When I first came online in the 90's we could purchase ad space in a magazine to get in front of people who had the same interests. Or we could buy billboard space, do a post card mailing, hire a sales team to do prospecting, run a television ad, and more. I personally choose PPC as my main focus because I could start out small and grow my ad spends with my company growth.

I've done joint ventures, ad shares, coregistration and other things to grow our list to where it is today yet NOTHING has helped us as much as PPC has. It is the #1 reason why we have almost 400,000 people following me on our social media channels.

Rather than placing a $25,000 ad in a magazine, I can now place a $25 per day ad on the side of the Facebook Page of that magazine and get in front of the same people. (I can also target their readers and show up in their newsfeed!) Instead of buying a $15,000 radio spot on a network that impacts specific viewers of a top radio show, I can now buy a $50 ad and place it on the side of the Facebook Page of that radio community and it's listeners. Rather than spending $15,000 on list buys, I can spend $100 per day and get in front of the exact same people through Facebook Ads or Google Adwords.? I can also control who sees what on a daily basis, rather than letting an ad manager do that for me without any input on results or response.

Today I'd like to give you a few helpful tips for your PPC ads. If you use these tips, your conversion will increase and you'll see more response to your ad placements.

PPC Made Simple Top Tips

1. Write your ad like a headline- One strategy you might want to use is to Write Your Ad Like A Headline With Capital Letters At The Start Of Each Word. This catches the eye differently and increases conversion. You can't use ALL CAPS in advertisements online, it won't get approved. But You Can Use A Capital Letter at the start of every word in your headline.

2. Ask a question. Make a statement. Rather than saying, "Best 50 Recipes For Summer For Moms" write your ad like this:? "What Do You Cook On A Summer Night When Everyone's Starving? Free Guide!"

3. Use the words your client is already using. Everyone of us 'hears' something in our head. Ironically, ever niche has a common 'voice.' You'll see that voice, word choices and common language on Amazon when people comment about a book. Read those comments! Read the best sellers and the comments people write in your niche. Go to the local book store. Read the magazines on a monthly basis in your particular niche! Then use these words for ridiculous increased conversion in your ads.

4. Use exclamation marks or question marks, but NEVER use a period at the end of a headline in a PPC ad. When you ask a question the ? completes that thought. When you make a declarative statement, a ! does the same thing. But in a PPC ad, ending the statement with . doesn't help. Don't use periods in your ads.

I hope these tips help you to more effectively write ads that convert. For more than 4 hours of helpful insights like this, along with live interaction screen shots in the back office of my Facebook Ad Manager and Google Adwords, take my Pay Per Click Made Simple Course. Here's a handy coupon code to use as well, my gift to thank you for being so amazing in all you do:? COUPON CODE: PPC50. This will get you $50.00 off today! http://www.PPCMadeSimple.com

Hillary Clinton says she wants America to have a woman president. Surprised?

'I really do hope that we have a woman president in my lifetime,'?Hillary Rodham Clinton?said this week.?Was that a hint about her own possible candidacy?

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / June 22, 2013

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton addresses the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) meeting in Chicago last week. Her speech was a broad-brush address heralding the power of women and talking education and opportunity.

She didn?t say she?s going to run for the White House in 2016. But, to many listeners, the latest words of Hillary Rodham Clinton certainly hint that it?s a strong possibility.

?Let me say this, hypothetically speaking,? she said, ?I really do hope that we have a woman president in my lifetime.?

Members of the audience, at a women?s lecture series in Toronto, cheered.

To get beyond the ?hypothetical," a quick follow-up question: Isn?t it possible that, when voters get the opportunity to see a woman on the presidential ballot as a major contender, the initials of that nominee might be H.R.C.?

Answer: Yes, it looks very possible.

Mrs. Clinton currently gets a ?favorable? rating from 6 in 10 Americans, is widely known, and has been making moves you might expect of someone positioning herself for a presidential run.

After being Secretary of State, she?s bowed out of public service for President Obama?s second term. She?s showing her interest in domestic affairs by engaging in an initiative for early childhood education. Having been a strong contender for the Democratic nomination back in 2008, she knows a lot about campaigning.

Some other major democracies have had female chief executives, including people like Margaret Thatcher in Britain and, currently, Angela Merkel in Germany. For more than two centuries, America hasn?t broken that gender barrier.

?I think it would send exactly the right historic signal to girls and women, as well as boys and men,? Clinton told the Thursday crowd in Toronto. Video?footage of the comments, captured by an audience member, was posted on YouTube.com by the Associated Press Friday.

?It really depends on women stepping up and subjecting themselves to the political process,? Clinton added.

Quoting another former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, Clinton said women need Rhinoceros-thick skins to be in politics.

She also said electing a woman would require a ?leap of faith? for US voters.

Some polls have found Americans saying they have no problem with the idea of a woman as president. A?Gallup poll?in 2006, for example, found 6 in 10 saying Americans are ?ready? for that.

Will Clinton herself ?step up? for the 2016 contest? We?ll see. Her popularity has ebbed and flowed over the years, but since early 2008 a majority of Americans have given her a favorable rating in Gallup polls.

She has lots of fans. But as she departed from her role as Secretary of State, Clinton?s aura of success in that job was tarnished by?controversy?over the State Department?s handling of events in Benghazi, Libya, in which Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in a terrorist attack.

And she has long been a magnet for conservative criticism. On Thursday, the Republican group America Rising launched a?StopHillary2016.org?website to raise funds in opposition to her potential candidacy.

U.S. seeks Snowden's extradition, urges Hong Kong to act quickly

By Steve Holland and Phil Stewart

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States pressured Hong Kong on Saturday to act quickly on its request to extradite Edward Snowden, a former U.S. National Security Agency contractor charged with espionage for exposing secret U.S. surveillance activities.

"If Hong Kong doesn't act soon, it will complicate our bilateral relations and raise questions about Hong Kong's commitment to the rule of law," a senior Obama administration official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Sources say Snowden, who has been hiding in Hong Kong, has sought legal representation from human rights lawyers as he prepares to fight attempts to force him back to the United States to face trial.

U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon told CBS News the United States had a "good case" against Snowden and expected Hong Kong to comply with its 1998 extradition treaty with the United States.

"We have gone to the Hong Kong authorities seeking extradition of Snowden back to the United States," Donilon said.

He added that U.S. law enforcement officials were in a "conversation" with Hong Kong authorities about the issue.

"Hong Kong has been a historically good partner of the United States in law enforcement matters and we expect them to comply with the treaty in this case," Donilon said.

A senior U.S. law enforcement source said extradition "can, of course, be a lengthy legal process" but expressed optimism that Snowden would be extradited.

The South China Morning Post said on Saturday that Snowden was not detained or in police protection - as reported elsewhere - and instead was in a "safe place" somewhere in Hong Kong.

The paper also quoted Snowden offering new details about U.S. spy activities, including accusations of U.S. hacking of Chinese mobile phone companies.

"The NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS (texting) data," Snowden was quoted by the Post as saying during a June 12 interview.

Documents previously leaked by Snowden revealed that the NSA has access to vast amounts of internet data such as emails, chat rooms and video from large companies such as Facebook and Google, under a government program known as Prism.

They also showed that the government had worked through the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to gather so-called metadata - such as the time, duration and telephone numbers called - on all calls carried by service providers such as Verizon.

On Friday, the Guardian newspaper, citing documents shared by Snowden, said Britain's spy agency GCHQ had tapped fiber-optic cables that carry international phone and internet traffic and is sharing vast quantities of personal information with the NSA.

ESPIONAGE CHARGES

The United States charged Snowden with theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person, according to the criminal complaint made public on Friday.

The latter two offenses fall under the U.S. Espionage Act and carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

Scores of Americans have been sent back home from Hong Kong to face trial under the extradition treaty. But the process can take years, lawyers say, and Snowden's case could be particularly complex.

America's use of the Espionage Act against Snowden has fueled debate among legal experts about whether that could complicate his extradition, since the treaty includes an exception for political offenses and Hong Kong courts may choose to shield him from prosecution.

Snowden says he leaked the details of the classified U.S. surveillance to expose abusive and illegal programs that trampled on citizens' privacy rights.

President Barack Obama and his intelligence chiefs have vigorously defended the programs, saying they are regulated by law and that Congress was notified. They say the programs have been used to thwart militant plots and do not target Americans' personal lives.

Stephen Vladeck, a professor at American University's Washington College of Law who studies national security issues, said there is no clear definition of what constitutes a political offense under the treaty.

"My intuition says it'll be easier for Snowden to argue espionage is a political offense than (the U.S. charge of) theft of government property," Vladeck said.

The South China Morning Post reported on Saturday that Snowden said he had documents showing NSA had hacked major Chinese telecoms companies to access text messages and targeted China's top Tsinghua University.

The NSA program also hacked the Hong Kong headquarters of Pacnet, which has an extensive fiber-optic network, the paper said.

Brazilian youth 'want change now'

Brazil has changed immensely since Julia Michaels moved there 30 years ago, but the change came slowly. She sees recent protests as a pivotal shift.

When I first came to Brazil, in 1981, hit parade American songs took six months to show up on the radio here. When I first came, working-class people over 30 had false teeth. Now, they sport braces.

Last year, I tried to explain to Alessandra Orofino, the young co-founder of the successful new Meu Rio digital activism group, how much the country has changed.

?I don?t care about that,? she said. ?I wasn?t here to see it and I?m here now, and I want change now.?

Who are these young people?

Who are the protesters, people who have taken to the streets all over the country, at long last? There?s great variety. [Earlier this week] on television, I saw teachers in Juazeiro do Norte whose wages had been cut 40 percent. Discovering their mayor at a bank branch making a deposit (!), they surrounded him. Hours later, the police safely escorted him out.

From what I?ve watched on TV, read on Facebook, and, last Monday night, seen on the streets of Rio myself, the protesters are mostly young men in their twenties, students. Not workers. So why are they protesting?

I bet the mayors of Rio and S?o Paulo rue the day this past January, when they bowed to President Dilma Rousseff?s request that they put off the bus fare hike for six months, to help her keep inflation down. If the fare hike had taken place then, the students would have been on vacation?

As I said in my last post, the fare hike is a painful reminder of Brazil?s two-tiered socioeconomic structure, where rich and poor each have their own health care, schools, transportation, and public safety solutions. Many of the protesters may not use the public health system and may have gone to private schools. But they take buses. And though they may not make the hours-long commute of a maid, waiter or gas-station attendant, they also feel the oppression of a system that provides poorly-managed, inadequate service at a real cost unknown to passengers.

The fare hike reminded them that this is the case in every aspect of life here. And, while workers, especially those with the long commutes, don?t have time to march in the streets, the students do.

I?m not saying they?re a bunch of altruists, marching for workers.

They just feel the inequality in their own skin ? and they know, consciously or not, that a country with a system like this one won?t go far. That makes a difference in their futures.

Why didn?t bus-riding students speak up before? Brazil has become a middle-class country. ?When it was a country of haves and have-nots, what was the use of complaining about injustices? Now, when Brazilians feel more alike than ever before, the system?s logic looks more skewed than ever before. No one invests in change until change begins to look possible.

What will come of all this?

President Rousseff?s government, and every one that preceded hers, probably back to colonial times, is stitched onto the top of a society where you don?t know the real costs (nor the real back-room deals) of poorly managed, inadequate public services. She?s said the protesters? gripes are legitimate and deserve to be heard ? and this is the right thing to say.

But ? how is she going to fix, as fast as Alessandra Orofino would like, the nations?s schools, hospitals, police, buses, trains, highways, and metro systems? Not to mention airports.

Her government is built on shaky political alliances that involve a lot of bone-tossing, and I imagine she and many other politicians, at all levels, will try tossing bones to the protesters. Already, some mayors have lowered bus fares.

It?s not about twenty centavos

The world holds many surprises for us: who ever thought it possible to take down the Berlin Wall in 1989? Who ever thought that hundreds of thousands of Brazilians would wake up to the inequities and injustice in their country? In the 30-plus years I?ve lived here, until last week, I thought change would continue to occur gradually. But you can download a song almost instantaneously now, and you can get a movement going without using personalist politics ? collaboratively. Leadership is no longer as crucial as it once was.

So maybe, just maybe, the dialogue that comes out of the unrest will get us somewhere, a little less slowly than I thought. #CHANGEBRAZIL

Interview: Patti Novak, 'America's Toughest Matchmaker,' on Love ...

Creating relationships is a multi-billion dollar industry, and we?ve been seeing a lot of new takes on this business, from speed dating and niche online dating services such as Beautiful People???which, you guessed it, only allows beautiful people to join ? to more one-sided business models such as coaching services, and pheromones that promise love in a bottle. One of the oldest methods of finding love that people still turn to is matchmaking. With the advance and acceptance of dating systems, matchmakers are making a resurgence, and Patti Novak, also known as ?America?s Toughest Matchmaker,? is leading the charge.

Get Over Yourself Patti NovakBorn and raised in Buffalo, New York, Patti Novak began her career in matchmaking at the age of 10 when she was voted ?The Next Ann Landers? by her eighth grade class. Patti Novak went on to star in the critically acclaimed A&E series Confessions of a Matchmaker, and has matched thousands of couples throughout her career. Patti has been appeared on CNN, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Today Show, and has been featured in numerous publications such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. We talked to Patti Novak about her career, experience, and tips for dating in the modern world. Read on for Patti?s refreshing take on relationship facts and fiction.

What makes you ?America?s toughest matchmaker??

I believe in the tough love approach, and the fact that I?m not afraid to be blunt with my clients about how to improve themselves is one of the many things that makes me successful in helping people find love.

What are some of the most memorable moments from your career in matchmaking?

The ?firsts,? such as the first marriage announcement, the first baby announcement, my national TV show, writing my book, and having the opportunity to sit with Oprah for 45 minutes are just a few of many memorable moments throughout my 13-year career as a professional matchmaker.

You write that ?guys should make the initial call and suggest where to have the date.? Can you speak to gender equality and expectations in modern dating?

In a complicated modern dating world, I feel that it gives men the strength of decisiveness which is an attractive quality for men to possess. It also takes the awkwardness out of that ?first date.?

You have a very honest and blunt personality ? how do the people you work with react to that?

I use humor and love as part of my approach while being blunt and honest with people. It seems to me that the American single people are ready for it and crave it.

What is the biggest obstacle people face in finding love?

There are many obstacles for single people. Among them are a lack of self-love, self-worth, and self-respect. In addition, people often are in a pattern of poor picking when it comes to relationships.

What was your favorite moment from Confessions of a Matchmaker??

My most rewarding experience on that show was with Paul S. He had poor manners, acted narcissistic at times, and he was an underachiever in his career based on his love for music. Since the show, he is not only exclusively dating a wonderful woman, but he has become more successful in his professional life.

Do you have fun scolding your clients?

No. I take my job very seriously and the ?scolding,? in my opinion, is more akin to constructive criticism and coaching them to success.

You have a very strict screening process for your matchmaking services. What percentage of applicants do you turn away and what are the most common reasons?

I turn about 20% of prospective clients away for various reasons. Some people just aren?t ready emotionally, physically, or mentally for dating.

You have said that many of the women you have worked with are attracted to ?malignant narcissists.? Why do you think that is?

Often times, a narcissist will initially come across as very charming, attractive, doting, confident, and full of passion. Unfortunately, the undesirable traits of a narcissist don?t fully rear their heads until they?ve gotten underneath your skin like a parasite.

Can you tell us what are the most important components of your matchmaking process?

My screening process is key. This is where I really find out who I?m dealing with.

You have advised people who have trouble having conversations because they are shy to memorize a list of topics before the date and practice asking questions. Do you have any more advice for shy daters?

[In addition] to going to the date with some interesting conversation to offer, listening to understand will help them to respond accordingly and keep the conversation flowing smoothly.

How has online dating changed the way we have relationships?

I think online dating is a good way for people to practice and sharpen their dating skills, but the safety risks often outweigh the benefits.

What are the most common or egregious relationship myths?

Although young opposites can attract, I don?t believe that this mantra hold true for more mature individuals. I think we are better off with our mirror as a partner.

Another myth, in my opinion, is love at first sight. I believe in chemistry and lust at first, but definitely not true love. Sex can happen in a day, but it can take months to truly get to know someone to the point of being capable of intimacy and love.

What was the proudest moment of your career?

When my daughter Jessica decided to follow in my footsteps.

FAA moving toward easing electronic device use

(AP Photo/Eric Risberg, File)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The government is moving toward easing restrictions on airline passengers using electronic devices to listen to music, play games, read books, watch movies and work during takeoffs and landings, but it could take a few months.

An industry-labor advisory committee was supposed to make recommendations next month to the Federal Aviation Administration on easing the restrictions. But the agency said in a statement Friday the deadline has been extended to September because committee members asked for extra time to finish assessing whether it's safe to lift restrictions.

"The FAA recognizes consumers are intensely interested in the use of personal electronics aboard aircraft; that is why we tasked a government-industry group to examine the safety issues and the feasibility of changing the current restrictions," the statement said.

The agency is under public and political pressure to ease the restrictions as more people bring their e-book readers, music and video players, smartphones and laptops with them when they fly.

Technically, the FAA doesn't bar use of electronic devices when aircraft are below 10,000 feet. But under FAA rules, airlines that want to let passengers use the devices are faced with a practical impossibility ? they would have to show that they've tested every type and make of device passengers would use to ensure there is no electromagnetic interference with aircraft radios and electrical and electronic systems.

As a result, U.S. airlines simply bar all electric device use below 10,000 feet. Airline accidents are most likely to occur during takeoffs, landings, and taxiing.

Cellphone calls and Internet use and transmissions are also prohibited, and those restrictions are not expected to be lifted. Using cellphones to make calls on planes is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. There is concern that making calls from fast-flying planes might strain cellular systems, interfering with service on the ground. There is also the potential annoyance factor ? whether passengers will be unhappy if they have to listen to other passengers yakking on the phone.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that a draft report by the advisory committee indicates its 28 members have reached a consensus that at least some of the current restrictions should be eased.

A member of the committee who asked not to be named because the committee's deliberations are supposed to be kept private told The Associated Press that while the draft report is an attempt to reach consensus, no formal agreement has yet been reached.

There are also still safety concerns, the member said. The electrical interference generated by today's devices is much lower than those of a decade ago, but many more passengers today are carrying electronics.

Any plan to allow gate-to-gate electronic use would also come with certification processes for new and existing aircraft to ensure that they are built or modified to mitigate those risks. Steps to be taken could include ensuring that all navigational antennas are angled away from the plane's doors and windows. Planes that are already certified for Wi-Fi would probably be more easily certified.

Although the restrictions have been broadly criticized as unnecessary, committee members saw value in them.

One of the considerations being weighed is whether some heavier devices like laptops should continue to be restricted because they might become dangerous projectiles, hurting other passengers during a crash, the committee member said. There is less concern about tablets and other lighter devices.

FAA officials would still have the final say. An official familiar with FAA's efforts on the issue said agency officials would like to find a way to allow passengers to use electronic devices during takeoffs and landings the same way they're already allowed to use them when planes are cruising above 10,000 feet. The official requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak by name.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta told a Senate panel in April that he convened the advisory committee in the hope of working out changes to the restrictions.

"It's good to see the FAA may be on the verge of acknowledging what the traveling public has suspected for years ? that current rules are arbitrary and lack real justification," Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., one of Congress' more outspoken critics of the restrictions, said in a statement. She contends that unless scientific evidence can be presented to justify the restrictions, they should be lifted.

Edward Pizzarello, the co-founder of frequent flier discussion site MilePoint, says lifting the restriction is "long overdue."

"I actually feel like this regulation has been toughest on flight attendants. Nobody wants to shut off their phone, and the flight attendants are always left to be the bad guys and gals," said Pizzarello, 38, of Leesburg, Va.

Actor Alec Baldwin became the face of passenger frustration with the restrictions in 2011 when he was kicked off a New York-bound flight in Los Angeles for refusing to turn off his cellphone. Baldwin later issued an apology to fellow American Airlines passengers who were delayed, but mocked the flight attendant on Twitter.

"I just hope they do the sensible thing and don't allow people to talk on their cellphones during flight," said Pizzarello, who flies 150,000 to 200,000 miles a year. "There are plenty of people that don't have the social skills necessary to make a phone call on a plane without annoying the people around them. Some things are better left alone."

"It'll be nice not to have to power down and wait, but it never really bothered me. As long as they don't allow calls I'll be happy," said Ian Petchenik, 28, a Chicago-based consultant and frequent flier.

Henry Harteveldt, an analyst with Hudson Crossing, said airlines would only profit if the FAA also amended the rules to allow passengers to access the Internet earlier ? something that is not being suggested.

"Unless the FAA is considering relaxing the rules on Wi-Fi access, this is not about making money. This is about keeping the passenger entertained," he said.

Heather Poole, a flight attendant for a major U.S. airline, blogger and author of the novel "Cruising Attitude," said easing the restrictions would make flight attendants' jobs "a whole lot easier."

There is a lot of pressure for airlines to have on-time departures, she said. Flight attendants are dealing with an "out-of-control" carry-on bag situation and then have to spend their time enforcing the electronics rule.

"These days, it takes at least five reminders to get people to turn off their electronics, and even then, it doesn't always work," Poole said. "I think some passengers believe they're the only ones using their devices, but it's more like half the airplane doesn't want to turn it off."

But there is concern about whether easing restrictions will result in passengers becoming distracted by their devices when they should be listening to safety instructions.

On a recent flight that had severe turbulence, a business class passenger wearing noise-canceling headphones missed the captain's announcement to stay seated, Poole recalled.

"Takeoff and landing is when passengers need to be most aware of their surroundings in case ? God forbid ? we have to evacuate," she said. "I don't see that guy, or any of the ones like him, reacting very quickly."

Samsung Galaxy NX Hands-On: I Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Should I?)

The first thing that strikes you about Samsung's new Android-powered interchangeable-lens camera is how big that 4.8-inch AMOLED screen looks on the back of a camera. Even when it's turned off, the blackness stares back at you like an enrapturing abyss.

Samsung Galaxy NX Hands-On: I Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Should I?)

Then, when you flip the camera on, the TouchWiz Android UI is right there in front of you, showing a special camera widget. Hold down the shutter, and the camera interface we saw on the Galaxy camera pops up. From there, there's an unlabeled click wheel where a mode dial would be on a DSLR. Give it a spin and it'll alternate between basic shooting modes and some of the camere's features.

Samsung Galaxy NX Hands-On: I Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Should I?)

It's all very speedy. Our only complaint is that Samsung didn't make a prettier GUI for the deep menu structure that's native to the NX series. Shooting photos feels like you're using a smartphone camera, but going in to tweak deep camera settings, feels like you're still trapped in the past.

Samsung Galaxy NX Hands-On: I Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Should I?)

This is all very modern stuff applied to the old concept of interchangeable lenses. Yup, the whole time you're using this thing, you're staring at the screen like it's a phone, so much you'll almost forget that this thing has a viewfinder you can put your eye up to. You might also forget that the APS-C guts and refined interchangeable optics you're using are so good that it might even be worth sticking you eye into that peep-hole see if you can't make the most of them.

We'l have to wait until we've taken the Galaxy NX into the real world to find out if all the newness is useful, or just a distraction. No word on what this camera will cost when we'll actually get this camera in America?if we get it at all. For more info on specs and the like, check out our announcement post.

Canon Direct Print and Scan V2 available for Android

Canon Direct Print and Scan V2 available for Android

It?s always nice when you can get out there, take some cool photos, and print them off on the go. Or that feeling when you need to scan in that quick piece of artwork, and bring it to the design studio to submit before to your boss before deadline, and you can do it in a jiffy. Unfortunately, PC owners tend to not get the good end of the stick on these quick tasks, so it?s with a great emphasis on portability that Canon brings it to Android.

canon

For people who are always on the go, Canon has developed this application that allows you to wirelessly print and scan images via your Android phone and the multifunction embedded application platform (MEAP) Canon device. By doing this, you can instantly send images from your phone to the actual printer itself.

To add whipped cream to the already exciting ice cream dish, you can also wirelessly print web pages from your phone as well, using the built in Canon Android Application. This nifty little process can help aid in things as small as pizza orders all the way up to flight tickets that require a printout with a barcode. By doing this, Canon claims that they?re making it easier to use your mobile device more and more like a personal computer.

From the application, you can also adjust paper size, color range, brightness/saturation/contrast, and how many pages you want printed out. We?d like to see more apps like this implemented in the future, as being able to wirelessly print out our stuff is a big bonus for us, since we?re always on the go. You can pick up the Canon Direct Print and Scan Version 2.0 Android application in the Google Play store now.

The ?SNAP Challenge:? The claim that food stamp recipients get by on $4.50 a day - The Washington Post

The ?SNAP Challenge? is everywhere. More than two dozen Democrats, organized by Rep. Lee, announced they would take the challenge to highlight what they consider damaging cuts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the new name for food stamps. Newark mayor and Senate hopeful Cory Booker took a high-profile plunge into the Snap Challenge last year. Former representative Anthony Weiner, running for New York City mayor, is also participating.
During the challenge, lawmakers have been tweeting, under the hashtag #snapchallenge, pictures of the pathetic-looking meals they had assembled from their measly allotment. To wit:

Afghan peace bid on hold over Kabul-Taliban protocol row

By Amena Bakr

DOHA (Reuters) - A fresh effort to end Afghanistan's 12-year-old war was in limbo on Thursday after a diplomatic spat about the Taliban's new Qatar office delayed preliminary discussions between the United States and the Islamist insurgents.

A meeting between U.S. officials and representatives of the Taliban had been set for Thursday in Qatar but Afghan government anger at the fanfare surrounding the opening of a Taliban office in the Gulf state threw preparations into confusion.

The squabble may set the tone for what could be arduous negotiations to end a conflict that has torn at Afghanistan's stability since the U.S. invasion following the September 11, 2001 al Qaeda attacks on U.S. targets.

Asked when the talks would now take place, a source in Doha said, "There is nothing scheduled that I am aware of."

But the U.S. government said it was confident the U.S.-Taliban talks would soon go forward.

"We anticipate these talks happening in the coming days," said State Department spokesman Jen Psaki, adding that she could not be more specific. James Dobbins, the U.S. special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan "is packed and ready to go with his passport and suitcase," she said.

One logistical complication is a visit by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to Doha on Saturday and Sunday.

Kerry will discuss the Afghan peace talks with the Qatari hosts, senior U.S. officials said, but does not plan to get immersed in any talks himself or meet with Taliban representatives. A major part of his meeting will be devoted to talks on the Syrian civil war.

The opening of the Taliban office was a practical step paving the way for peace talks. But the official-looking protocol surrounding the event raised angry protests in Kabul that the office would develop into a Taliban government-in-exile. A diplomatic scramble ensued to allay the concerns.

Kerry spoke with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday and again on Wednesday in an effort to defuse the controversy.

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen appeared to side with Karzai by pointing out that alliance leaders at NATO's Chicago summit last year had made clear that the peace process in Afghanistan must be "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned".

"Reconciliation is never an easy process in any part of the world," Rasmussen told reporters in Brussels.

A Taliban flag that had been hoisted at the Taliban office in Qatar on Tuesday had been taken down and lay on the ground on Thursday, although it appeared still attached to a flagpole.

A name plate, inscribed "Political Office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" had been removed from the outside of the building. But a similar plaque fixed onto a wall inside the building was still there on Thursday morning, witnesses said.

Asked whether the Taliban office had created any optimism about peace efforts, the source replied: "Optimism and pessimism are irrelevant. The most important thing is that we now know the Taliban are ready to talk, and sometimes talk is expensive."

Word of the U.S.-Taliban talks had raised hopes that Karzai's government and the Taliban might enter their first-ever direct negotiations on Afghanistan's future, with Washington acting as a broker and Pakistan as a major outside player.

Waging an insurgency to overthrow Karzai's government and oust foreign troops, the Taliban has until now refused talks with Kabul, calling Karzai and his government puppets of the West. But a senior Afghan official said earlier the Taliban was now willing to consider talks with the government.

"It's hard to talk and fight at the same time," said Marc Grossman, Dobbins' predecessor as the U.S. envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The talks will be "really" difficult, said Grossman, now vice chairman at The Cohen Group consulting firm. He added that he was heartened that the protocol dispute, which he called "the first bump" in the process, was being worked out.

PRISONER SWAP

Pakistan's powerful military played a central role in convincing the Taliban to hold talks with Washington, U.S. and Pakistani officials said, a shift from widely held U.S. and Afghan views that it was obstructing peace in the region.

A prisoner swap is seen as likely to happen as the first confidence-building measure between the two sides, said one Pakistani official, who declined to be named.

But he said there were many likely spoilers in the peace process who would want to maintain the status quo to continue to benefit from the war economy and the present chaotic conditions.

"The opening of a Taliban office and the American readiness to hold talks with the Taliban is a forward movement. What happens next depends on the quality of dialogue and political will of the interlocutors," he said.

Pakistan has been particularly critical of Karzai, seeing him as an obstacle to a peace settlement.

In its talks with the U.S. officials, the Taliban was expected to seek the return of former commanders now held at the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba, as well as the departure of all foreign troops.

The United States wants the return of the only known U.S. prisoner of war from the conflict, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who is believed to be held by the Taliban.

Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman, reiterated Washington's desire to free Bergdahl and acknowledged that the Taliban are likely to raise their detainees at Guantanamo early in any talks.

"The exchange of detainees is something the Taliban has raised in the past and we certainly expect they will raise it," she said. "We are open to discussing this issue as part of the negotiations."

U.S. President Barack Obama cannot transfer the Taliban detainees from Guantanamo without a written notification to the U.S. Congress, where some lawmakers vigorously oppose that move.

The Doha protocol dispute burst into the open on Wednesday when Karzai said his government would not join U.S. talks with the Taliban and would halt negotiations with Washington on a post-2014 troop pact.

Officials from Karzai's government, angered by the official-sounding name the Taliban chose for its political office in Doha, said the United States had violated assurances it would not give official status to the insurgents.

A statement on Qatar's foreign ministry website late on Wednesday said that the office was called the "Political Bureau for Afghan Taliban in Doha".

The source familiar with the matter said: "The Taliban have to understand that this office isn't an embassy and they are not representing a country."

After Microsoft hits reset on its Xbox DRM policies, gamers react ...

It seems like the backlash was too much for Microsoft: Yesterday, President Don Mattrick wrote a blog post officially walking back the changes the company had made to game DRM for the Xbox One, citing ?user feedback.?

?While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content,? Hattrick wrote.

Here?s a summary of the changes:

  • No more constant internet connection needed for disc or downloaded games, but you do need one to set the system up initially.
  • Users will be able to play offline, but will no longer have the ability to play a game without the disc in the tray.
  • Sharing is at the owner?s discretion, but is limited to physical sharing of the disc. The Xbox Live library shares introduced by Microsoft no longer exist.
  • Games are eligible for resale at the behest of retailers (like Gamestop).

Essentially, the Xbox One now, for all intents and purposes, operates the same way that the Xbox 360 does today ? no cloud, no sharing, and no Internet.

This extensive rollback of all of Microsoft?s changes to the console has lead fans to call it the ?Xbox 180? ? and has divided a gaming community that is now suddenly confused about how to feel towards the Xbox One.

The change hasn?t necessarily won back the hearts of gamers automatically ? some in the community are now reacting towards Microsoft?s seemingly ?all-or-nothing? behavior that sacrifices all of cloud gaming and sharing properties to bring offline play to the table.

A popular infographic posted onto /r/ gaming, entitled ?What We Want Xbox One,? shows how Microsoft could divide DRM based on media choice and gives a pretty clear indication that the only thing gamers want in this instance is choice. The choice to play into the DRM measures that unlock the access to the cloud, and the option to play offline at another time.

Still others are involved in the backlash to the second backlash, defending Microsoft and deriding others for complaining about the features in the first place. One notable person in this camp is Gears of War?creator?Cliff ?CliffyB??Bleszinski, who expressed concerns on Twitter that walking back the DRM meant Microsoft left small-time developers out in the cold and prey to the resale industry.

?I want *developers* who worked their asses off to see money on every copy of their game that is sold instead of Gamestop. F*ck me, right?? Bleszinski tweeted.

And, still others are concerned that Microsoft refuses to address the level of data collecting and privacy implications of the system itself, and continue to press the company on unveiling more information about the system as a whole.

Plenty of memes?still poke at Xbox One?s?other mandatory feature, the Kinect.?SlashGear has also reported that the Xbox Kinect may have to come with a warning sticker that announced the government may have access to the device if a new bill, entitled the ?We Are Watching You? Act, passes congress.?Microsoft has done very little to allay concerns about privacy, which still has the potential to turn away a large section of the fanbase.

In the long term, it?s hard to imagine that Microsoft has alienated its entire community wholesale, and that its snap-decisions will drastically affect the Xbox One or future consoles from the company. However, what this proves is that forced DRM by requiring a constant online connection or server check-ins will never fly with the core gaming fanbase. When purchasing a game, players want to feel a sense of choice and of ownership ? that the game is theirs. Microsoft?s DRM undermined ownership, so the community complained.

I believe that there is a way to successfully implement a cloud-based system, but the next company to take a crack at it needs to listen to the gamers. Because really, all they want is the option. Is that too much to ask?

Junior dos Santos questions Cain Velasquez?s power

UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez has stopped ten of the twelve opponents he?s beaten with strikes. However, in the opinion of top contender Junior dos Santos (16-2), Velasquez?s power is nothing to fear. And, after a five-round drumming in their December match-up that never saw JDS go down for the count, he certainly has the experience to back up his claims.

Dos Santos recently spoke with Brazilian radio show Panico where he made a bold comparison when discussing Velasquez?s ability to finish foes with a single shot.

?He hits like a girl,? said Dos Santos. ?He hit me a lot during the five rounds, but did not open any cuts, although I was very swollen and had to go to the hospital.?

While ?Cigano? may not be concerned about Velasquez?s power, he clearly understands the danger involved when it comes to the title-holder?s stand-up. As alluded to, Dos Santos was badly beaten in their bout even if his lights were never turned out.

No date has been set for their next meeting though it is believed to be taking place in October at UFC 166.

Winner of 'The Voice' is ...

TV

Image: Danielle Bradbery

Trae Patton / NBC

Danielle Bradbery was named "The Voice" champ on Tuesday.

It was the Danielle Bradbery show on Tuesday night, as it has been all season on "The Voice."

The 16-year-old was crowned as the season four champion, beating fellow finalists Michelle Chamuel and The Swon Brothers. In doing so, she gave Blake Shelton his third championship in a row, and provided a fitting conclusion to a season dominated by country music.

?I don?t even know ? I?m so grateful,? she told Carson Daly when he gave her the good news. ?Sorry ... I?m speechless.?

She was unable to get through her scheduled solo because of her emotions, so at the moment of her coronation, ?The Voice? was silent.

Danielle has been the front-runner since her first blind audition. She?s the winner straight from Hollywood central casting: A teenage girl with no live performances before any kind of a crowd gets discovered and rises to stardom as a national TV audience watches her confidence grow each week. If that sounds like an eerie parallel to ?American Idol? champion Carrie Underwood, who won in that show?s fourth season, well, "The Voice" probably hopes that?s not where the similarities end.

Even on the NBC competition where everyone gets praised as a future superstar, the accolades that have come Danielle's way have been off the charts. Blake several times called her one of the most important people ever to take the stage. Fellow original coach Adam Levine declared her the winner halfway through the finale performances on Monday night. The producers gave her prime slots each week, including two of the final three solos in the finals.

Now, the powers that be behind the show are likely hoping her singles will go to the top of the charts and that she?ll do as well in Nashville as she did on "The Voice," and become the superstar that the show needs. Everyone involved appears to think she has the potential, and she?ll get every chance to realize it now.

Michelle finished in second place. The pride of Team Usher and final remaining hope of anyone who didn?t want a Blake threepeat did all she could on Monday?s show to win support, and was again excellent on Tuesday. But ultimately it wasn?t enough for the alt-rock singer to overcome the country trend.

The Swon Brothers, also of Team Blake, closed out their surprising season in third place, but once again looked like they were having nothing but fun along the way. After all, as they pointed out, they ?got to sing with Bob Seger.?

The night featured the usual array of live performances and video clips. In addition to the Swon-Seger performance, Michelle sang with One Republic, and Danielle with Hunter Hayes. Original coach Christina Aguilera, who is returning next season along with CeeLo Green, had a duet with Pitbull, and Florida Georgia Line with Nelly. Bruno Mars and Cher had solos. Video footage revealed trouble in paradise for the Adam-Blake bromance, and that Usher tends to split his pants when performing.

But ultimately, the star of the night was the youngest singer in the competition, as Danielle once again stole the show.

Afghan Taliban claim they killed 4 US troops

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The Taliban have claimed responsibility for an attack in Afghanistan that killed four U.S. troops just hours after the insurgent group announced it would hold talks with the Americans on finding a political solution to ending the nearly 12-year war.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said on Wednesday that the militants fired two rockets into the Bagram Air Base late on Tuesday.

American officials confirmed the base had come under attack by indirect fire ? likely a mortar or rocket ? and that four U.S. troops were killed.

The attack underscores the challenges ahead after the Taliban and the U.S. announced they would hold talks in Qatar to try and negotiate a solution to the violence. President Barack Obama has cautioned this would be neither quick nor easy.

Swift kick? Mayer turns to 'Prancercise' star

Music

Well, thanks to John Mayer, Joanna Rohrback can now add another 4 minutes, 23 seconds to her 15 minutes of fame. In the video for his new single "Paper Doll," the singer and serial dater has placed the creator of "Prancercise" -- the half-horsey-dance, half-skipping exercise method that went viral at the end of May -- front and center.

Mayer himself makes no appearance in the video, which opens on Rohrback giving a short introduction, noting that it's good to have a "prance to romance to." She then offers medical warnings to consult a physician if you're pregnant or nursing before undertaking the prance. The rest of the video is of her horse-skipping down an empty suburban street on a sunny day while Mayer's "Paper Doll" plays and the lyrics scroll by at the bottom of the screen.

Mayer clearly wanted to call attention to his words with the video, and the meaning behind the lines has already generated some discussion. Over at Rolling Stone, the suggestion is that the song is about Mayer's former girlfriend Taylor Swift (whose "Dear John" was supposedly about their relationship, and which Mayer said "humiliated me"). Lyrics like "You're like 22 girls in one" (Swift has a song, "22") and the repeated use of the color red (the title of Swift's latest album) are clues, says the magazine, which then allows the words could actually be about any breakup with any girl.

Still, whatever he's writing about, it's hard to avoid the fact that Mayer leaves a lasting impression: Katy Perry recently told Vogue that she is "still madly in love with him."

Now, if we could only get Perry, Swift, Mayer and Rorhback to start prancing down the street -- that would be a video to remember.

High court says driver records protected

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court says lawyers may not obtain personal information from state driver license records to recruit clients for lawsuits.

The justices voted 5-4 Monday in favor of South Carolina residents who objected to solicitations from lawyers to join a lawsuit against car dealers. Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his majority opinions that a lawyer's solicitation of clients is prohibited by a federal privacy law intended to shield motor vehicle records.

The court left it to lower courts to determine whether letters sent by the lawyers were predominantly efforts to recruit clients.

Among the lawyers named in the Supreme Court appeal is Richard Harpootlian, former chairman of the South Carolina Democratic party.
