A remake of the invasion movie "Red Dawn" ? with its villains now digitally modified from Chinese to North Korean ? will finally hit American shores next year.

As a result, the movie?s producers last winter used digital technology and creative editing to change most of the invaders to North Koreans. (Staunchly communist North Korea is economically isolated and not a market for any American products.) Still, it took most of the year to find a distributor willing to take the movie on.

FilmDistrict Chief Executive Peter Schlessel declined to discuss ?Red Dawn.? Given that final details are still being worked out, however, it likely won?t hit theaters until 2012.

The new ?Red Dawn? cost about $60 million to produce. It stars Chris Hemsworth, who played the title character in ?Thor,? and was directed by Dan Bradley, second unit director on the last two ?Bourne? movies and the upcoming ?Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.?

Top EU official urges more integration

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The head of the European Union's executive arm urged Europe to get more united as it grapples to contain a debt crisis in Greece that's threatening the survival of the euro currency itself.

In a state of the union speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Barroso, who heads the European Commission, came down firmly in favor of the 27-nation EU having a stronger central government.

"If we do not move forward with more unification, we will suffer more fragmentation," he said Wednesday.

"I think this is going to be a baptism of fire for a whole generation," Barroso added.

Barroso's comments came as lawmakers in Finland and Germany prepare to vote on measures that will give the 17 countries that use the euro more powers to fight a debt crisis that's already led to Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek bailouts. Greece is lumbered with so much debt that many in the markets think it will have no option but to default.

As well as facing a crisis in the eurozone, the wider EU is dealing with problems afflicting its borderless travel area that many observers say call for stronger central management of the union. More integration though would mean that member countries would lose some powers they have considered part of national sovereignty.

Those measures were agreed by eurozone leaders July 21, but the delay in implementing them has been one of the main reasons for the turmoil in financial markets over the past few weeks.

While waiting for approval of the July 21 agreements, the ECB has stepped in to buy government bonds and drive down borrowing costs for Italy and Spain.

Fears the eurozone's third and fourth largest economy may get sucked into Europe's debt crisis had stoked fears they would lose access to market funding and be forced into requesting bailouts, like Greece, Ireland and Portugal already have.

The ECB launched the purchases only reluctantly, and Trichet indicated he expected the bailout fund ? the European Financial Stability Facility ? to be in a position to take them over.

Still, the euro440 billion available from the EFSF has not reassured markets; so far European leaders have resisted suggestions to increase its size.

Markets have also watched nervously as eurozone authorities pushed Greece to make more cutbacks to qualify for an installment of bailout money that is needed to keep the country from defaulting.

Perry headed into a Republican candidate debate on Thursday ranked as the leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination, according to recent public opinion polls.

A USA Today/Gallup poll released this week found Perry ahead of one-time Republican front-runner Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, with 31 percent favouring him to 24 percent for Romney among Republican likely voters.

A spokesman for Perry could not be reached for comment about the Flynt offer.

In 1999, then-incoming U.S. House Speaker Robert Livingston resigned after Flynt claimed to have uncovered evidence of an extramarital affair by the Louisiana Republican.

Flynt had bought a full-page newspaper advertisement offering $1 million for evidence of sexual dalliances by congressional Republicans, who were seeking to impeach then-President Bill Clinton over allegations that he had lied under oath about an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

Flynt in 2007 made a separate $1 million offer for evidence of illicit sexual encounters by high-ranking lawmakers, but that ended less dramatically than his 1998 offer.

Kara Kennedy, daughter of Ted Kennedy, dies at 51 (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Several years after she was deemed cancer-free, Kara Kennedy accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on behalf of her father, just weeks before Sen. Edward Kennedy died battling a brain tumor.

"She was very healthy. That's why this is such a shock," Joan Kennedy said.

Kennedy was a member of the Sport & Health fitness center, though spokeswoman Nancy Terry declined to release further details about the incident, citing member privacy.

Her ex-husband, Michael Allen, said Kara Kennedy frequently visited the club and went swimming every day if she could. He said details about her death would be released by The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. He said funeral arrangements are being made.

"Insofar as I'm concerned her legacy is one of courage and grit and determination in the face of her own illness and in the face of many family tragedies and limitless, absolutely limitless, devotion to our children," he said.

Kara Kennedy was born in 1960 to Edward and Joan Kennedy, just as her father was on the campaign trail for his brother John F. Kennedy during the presidential primaries.

The late senator wrote of his oldest child in his 2009 memoir, "True Compass," that "I had never seen a more beautiful baby, nor been happier in my life."

Later, she appeared with her father during his unsuccessful 1980 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, and she and her brother Edward Kennedy Jr. helped run the senator's 1988 re-election campaign.

Her lung cancer diagnosis came in 2002, and the prognosis was grim. But the family refused to accept that, the senator wrote. She had an operation in 2003 that doctors said was successful, and Edward Kennedy accompanied his daughter to chemotherapy treatments.

"Kara responded to my exhortations to have faith in herself," he wrote. "Today, nearly seven years later as I write this, Kara is a healthy, vibrant, active mother of two who is flourishing."

Her children, Grace and Max, are now teenagers.

Kara Kennedy's two brothers have dealt with health issues of their own: Edward Kennedy Jr. lost a leg to bone cancer as a child, and Patrick Kennedy had surgery in 1988 to remove a non-cancerous tumor that was pressing against his spine.

"Her magnificent strength in her successful battle with lung cancer was a quiet inspiration to all of us and provided her family and fellow patients with hope," the Edward M. Kennedy Institute said in a news release.

Five months before her death, Kara Kennedy wrote of her father and the institute named in his honor in an article published in The Boston Globe Magazine. In August 2009 Kara Kennedy accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, on behalf of her father during a White House ceremony. She smiled when President Barack Obama put his arm around her in a comforting way, and teared up when a statement was read about her father's accomplishments. When her father died later that month she read a psalm at his funeral mass in Boston; it spoke of bringing peace and justice and helping the poor.

"She was always there, but she was there for the cause and not for her own visibility," Lierman said Saturday. "I always found it so refreshing."

Increased melting of the Arctic Ocean?s frozen lid in the last few decades underscores a changing northern reality, scientists say ? that summer sea ice is on a downward spiral. ?The bigger picture here is this is continuing the long-term decline in sea ice cover,? says Mark Serreze, director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo.

Arctic sea ice melts back in the summer and re-freezes each winter, on average a little less each year in recent decades due in part to warming temperatures.

On September 9, University of Bremen researchers announced that the sea ice had bottomed out the previous day at 4.240 million square kilometers, breaking its 2007 record low of 4.267 million square kilometers.? But another group that uses the same data, from a microwave instrument on board the Aqua satellite, puts 2011 in second place, at least as of September 14.

That estimate, which comes from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, working with the International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, uses a different algorithm and hence gets slightly different results, says Walt Meier of NSIDC. The discrepancy may stem in part from the Bremen group?s ability to capture more fine-scale details such as small open-water areas atop the ice, of which there were plenty this year.

For its part, the NSIDC uses a different microwave instrument aboard a defense meteorological satellite to study ice cover. On September 13 the center announced that Arctic ice was near its record low: 4.34 million square kilometers on September 10, compared with the 2007 minimum of 4.17 million square kilometers (by its calculations).

?We are sitting at number two and I think we?re going to continue to sit at number two,? Serreze says, noting that summer?s end is already bringing cooler temperatures to the Arctic. The NSIDC doesn?t release final numbers until after the sea-ice skin has grown for several days.

To reach the historic 2007 minimum, high pressure over the Beaufort Sea and low pressure over northeastern Siberia pumped a lot of heat into the Arctic while persistent winds from the south melted and packed the ice together. This year, conditions were neither particularly favorable nor unfavorable for ice loss, Serreze says; instead, the loss might trace back partly to ice conditions this spring. ?The spring ice cover is just so thin now that it can?t take a hit,? he says.

This March, Arctic sea ice cover started out at the second-lowest areal extent seen since satellite measurements began in 1979. Melting got a slow start in the spring but picked up rapidly in early July. Between late March and late July, thick ice that had been around for more than five years declined by 16 percent, while first-year or younger ice declined by 30 percent, the NSIDC says.

That loss of thicker ice worries many scientists. This year, Arctic ice volume ? a combination of areal extent and thickness ? plummeted to the lowest levels yet, according to researchers led by Axel Schweiger of the University of Washington. In a paper to appear in the Journal of Geophysical Research ? Oceans, they report that 2010 Arctic ice volume was lower than that in 2007. And 2011 is lower yet.

Yet even with long-term decline, experts say that sea ice is variable enough to grow and possibly even expand some summers. In a paper published online last month in Geophysical Research Letters, a team led by Jennifer Kay of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder ran computer models suggesting that ice could stabilize or even grow for up to a decade, even in a warming climate.

?If we don?t see records for two, five, 10 years, that doesn?t mean the whole idea of global warming is invalidated,? Schweiger says.
