Sherrod Brown (D-OH) Honors ?Small Business? with Big - RedState

Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is in a tough race to maintain his seat against State Treasurer Josh Mandel. The Real Clear Politics average currently has Brown up by 7.7 points and Mandel is closing the gap, even after several weeks of extremely negative attack ads, not by Super Pacs, but directly from the Brown campaign itself. Not exactly a commanding lead for an incumbent who enjoys the support of the unions and the liberal ?base, both of which have sunk millions into his campaign.

Brown?s latest tactic is to sell himself as a free-market capitalist, though nearly everything in his past record screams otherwise. Today he sent out an email with the headline:

?Medina County Small Business Owner Named ?National Small Business Person of the Year.?

Now, I don?t know about you, but when I think of a ?small business? I tend to think of a family-owned business with a handful of employees, not dependent on the government for its?livelihood. Call me old-fashioned.

Senator Brown and the Small Business Administration (a government agency) have something a little different in mind than your local auto repair shop or the family-owned custard stand.

Brown?s email today highlighted a company called Clinical RM, owned by Victoria Tifft. Tifft dedicated her life to vaccine research after contracting malaria on a Peace Corp tour 20 years ago and the company, ?is a full service Contract Research Organization (CRO) specializing in support of clinical research, clinical trial services for biologics, drugs, and devices. ? All very nice.

She sat down for an interview with Entrepreneur after winning the Small Business Administration (SBA) Small Business Person of the Year Award and discussed how the business attained such success:

?Knowing how to take care of our customers has always helped us grow organically. As I always say to my staff, our customers do our selling for us, as a lot of our business is by referral or repeat business. So there was a certain point a couple years back that one customer told another and they told two more and they told two more. And that was the tipping point. We went from 25 or 50 folks to 150. We?re at little over 330 now, and we have aggressive growth plans to double that figure in the next three years.?

Great customer service, word of mouth?and a $98 million federal contract in April of 2011. And another $98 million in June of 2011. And another $20 million in April of 2012. ?You know, just one neighbor telling another, ?like every family-owned local business does. ?Our local custard stand ought to look into this federal contract ?repeat business? scheme.

Now, I understand that there may perhaps be some limited role for the government in researching technologies for control of infectious diseases. I?m old enough to remember kids suffering the effects of polio and I?m glad it?s mostly been?eradicated?in this country. I?m not faulting the company for the work they do or for seeking out government contracts when they are available. They have as much right as any other company to do so.

But it?s laughable that Sherrod Brown and the Government Bureau of Small Business Control?er?Small Business Administration?highlights this company as the embodiment of ?a successful ?small business? in the United States in 2012. According to Entrepreneur, the company has ?330 employees and annual revenues that reached $40 million,? much of the revenue as a result of government contracts. How does the local mom and pop business compete with that?

Of course Sherrod Brown is going to love this company and it?s government contracts. It comes as no surprise that ?Health Professionals? are among the top contributors to Sherrod Brown?s campaign, right below lawyers and law firms, ?just above real estate and securities and investment special interests. This is the same Sherrod Brown who said:

?This year, we are going to take our government out of the hands of corporate special interests and put it back into the hands of Ohio families ? where it belongs.?

Guess that depends on your definition of ?special interest? and on whether they donate to Dems and vote Democrat. ?Special interests are bad only if they vote Republican and/or are associated with Bain Capital. ?This is how the game is played. Just don?t tell the average Democratic voters because they?re not supposed to know.

Swan dive: Cool pool places - Sevensisters Post

Siddhartha Sarma:

There was a time, before the city skyline changed and so did our lifestyles, when diving into a clear pond or lake at a moment?s notice was a fun thing to do. That was then. Today you need to range far and wide to find such a water body anywhere around the city. What you have, instead, are swimming pools and this is just the right season to take up the sport for your whole family. There are nothing but benefits, if you do your homework and are ready to go the whole distance.

There are different categories of such pools in the city. The B P Chaliha Swimming Pool at the Nehru Stadium has for long been a mainstay both for serious and recreational swimmers. However, it saw a trough recently with toxic cyanobacteria being discovered. It has since been cleaned and spruced up and is open to both members and the public. For the latter, a plunge, literally, costs Rs100 an hour. Dighalipukhuri, which saw swimming classes periodically in the times past, is out of the picture.

Photo: Stephen Styris

The best facilities in the city are undoubtedly at the aquatic complex at Sarusajai Stadium, with an Olympic size pool and many visitors. However, Sarusajai?s distance from the city means working people can only go on weekends, although these days school students are more in number during weekdays too.

?Both B P Chaliha and Sarusajai are open to the public for recreational swimming, besides for athletes undergoing more rigourous training. The pools and surrounding facilities are maintained properly in a hygienic manner,? says S S Roy, officer on special duty with the sports department. For those wanting to take up swimming on a less regular basis, these government facilities are available at Rs100 per hour.

The second type of swimming facility available in Guwahati is the several hotels and resorts downtown and in the outlying areas, most of which are available for guests as well as visitors.

Photo: Stephen Styris

?The rates are Rs100 per hour. If someone wants a membership for regular visits, it is Rs1,500 per month. The pool is open for children from 3 pm to 6 pm, for ladies from 5 pm to 7 pm and for gents from 7 pm to 9 pm,? says Binod Chandra Das, incharge of swimming facilities at Hotel Grand Starline on G S Road.

However, barring some of the larger resorts, most hotel swimming pools, owing to space constraints, are smaller than regulation size and can only accommodate a few swimmers at a time. Bigger private pools like Dolphin near Zoo Road are also open for regular visitors at nominal rates.

The third kind are swimming facilities at schools, which are of regulation size. However, barring a few like Don Bosco High School, school facilities are not available for non-students or other children or adults. ?For our students who are undergoing swimming training, we have made arrangements for proper guidance and care, as well as safety measures. The pool is kept clean, treated and drained regularly,? says an official with the Delhi Public School, Guwahati.

Although several options are available in the city, the matter of hygiene is important, as untreated water or bacterial formations can cause several reactions and diseases. The cyanobacteria manifestation mentioned earlier, for instance, can lead to skin and gastrointestinal problems. Therefore if you want to take to swimming, either as a recreation or for serious healthy living, you will need to check the pool facilities, whether they are treated with chlorine in the exact amount and whether the water is drained regularly so bacteria does not form, since the climate of the region makes still water prone to various bacteria. ?The pool is closed once a week, on Thursday, when the water is drained and fresh treated water pumped in. We take care that the facilities are hygienic,? says Das. Stadium officials also state that, particularly because of the large number of members using facilities, care is taken so that the water does not cause problems to swimmers.

Once you have decided which swimming pool to frequent, you must also accessorise properly, with goggles, cap and proper, comfortable and rash-resistant swimwear. Professional swimmers will immediately remark on the importance of accessories. ?Whether one is a new swimmer or intends to spend several hours a day in the pool, one must get the right accessories and not compromise on quality. It is your body at stake,? says champion swimmer and trainer Elvis Ali Hazarika.

Professionals also advise supplementing your diet with healthy food and hydrating your system frequently. Moreover, both before and after swimming, you need to take care of your body with a proper hygiene regimen, including bathing in warm water to reduce skin tanning, as mentioned in the accompanying story. ?Everything needs to be checked, from the quality of water to what skincare product and soap you are using, to prevent dermatological reactions, particularly in this climate,? saysskin specialist Pankaj Adhikari. ?The water may even cause internal problems if it is not of the right quality.? Once you have everything in place, go ahead and take the plunge, literally. This is one of the best exercises for your body, and whether you want to be the next Michael Phelps or just want to cool off and work out in the water, you can be assured it will be time spent well.

Swimming accessories

It is not just about leaping into the water. You need to be kitted out in reliable accessories to prevent skin, hair or eye problems and to be comfortable. The rule is not just to go by brands, because there are fake ones in the market as well. Here is what to look out for.

Goggles

In case of any problem with the quality of water, your eyes will be the first to feel it. Therefore a reliable pair of plastic swimming goggles is a must. Do not compromise on quality, choose one which is airtight and will not leak inside when you are under water. There are many brands available, but there is a risk of some of them being fakes. Check the straps and quality of rubber or other material around the eyepieces thoroughly. Goggles come at a wide budget range. Cosco, a known sportswear brand, for instance, begins at Rs330 plus. Anything lower is probably a fake. Tribord also has different ranges, from Rs175 to Rs300. If you want to go really high up and ensure quality, try Arena?s goggles. The Arena Cobra, a pair of mirror goggles, comes at Rs2,400. Arena?s Venture and Tracks are also meant for serious pros but you can be assured of quality performance.

Cap

One item children seem to remember more than adults, although swimming instructors recommend this for everyone. It is not just for helping you swim faster. A cap helps protect your hair from reactions to chemicals in treated water. It is a must regardless of how much time per day you spend in the pool. Cosco, Tribord, Nabaji and some other brands come for around Rs100-Rs150. These days you also get caps made of coated mesh to hold in your hair more snugly and comfortably. A coated mesh cap from a known brand is for not less than Rs270-Rs280.

Swimwear

The most important accessory, it needs to be chosen based on several criteria. The first is functionality. Your costume should be comfortable both in and out of the pool. It might look good on you, but if the material or design ends up leaving rashes on your skin or chafe marks, it does not help. For children, a reliable brand at reasonable prices begins from Rs400-Rs600. For women, a Tribord one-piece comes at around Rs1,800, while men?s wear can range from Rs700 to Rs1,500 or higher. If you are willing to splurge, though, you can opt for some serious swimwear, like the Arena Powerskin XP Jammer, a

speedo lookalike for men but more comfortable, at about Rs6,800. Another Arena Powerskin, also shorts for men, comes for Rs9,800, while the Powerskin equivalent for women comes for Rs6,000. But with a Powerskin, as they say, you go places.

Optionals

Apart from these basic items, you can choose a few more accessories, just in case. Children and new swimmers (if a grownup doesn?t mind being seen in them) can go for inflatable armbands which come at around Rs350-400. A swimbelt is also effective for new enthusiasts and a good brand like Aptonia comes at around Rs300-Rs350. If you do need a vest, you can get one from Rs1,000 to Rs2,300. But that is in case you don?t trust the lifeguard much.

Home pools

If you just want the kids to splash around at home, and you can spare the water, you can also get one of those inflatable pools, which can accommodate four people at a time. Ensure that the water is clean and the pool, on being deflated, is stored properly. They come for around Rs4,500.

Care before and after the water

Swimming is one of the best exercises for your entire body. It not just cools you down during summers, it also uses all your muscles and builds lung power and stamina. But you need to take care of your body and skin after a dip and even before. Dr Pankaj Adhikari and former international swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika recommend some simple tips to ensure you only benefit from this sport.

Ensure the water does not have too much chlorine, which is harmful to the skin. Swimming pools are cleaned with chlorine but too much content in the water is counterproductive, causing eye and hair problems too. One of the most immediate effects of chlorinated water is darkening of skin.

Chlorine dries your skin and prevents it from retaining its normal moisture level, which leads to a tanning effect, making your skin dark. To prevent this, take a bath immediately after stepping out of the pool. The water you take a shower of must be lukewarm. Cold water will not help. Use a mild soap, not a strong deodorising sports soap, to be gentle to your skin. Also, several lotions and skin creams are available which can be applied after the bath. Waterproof sunscreen lotions are particularly recommended.

However, be cautious in choosing these lotions because some may have chemicals which may make the skin darker instead. Also, a combination of chlorinated water, soap, warm water and lotion chemicals may trigger off an allergic reaction like rashes. Ensure the lotion does not contain an allergen. Make a checklist of the allergies you might be prone to and check the ingredients of the skincare lotion so that your particular allergy is not triggered.

Moisturise your skin as well

Once you start swimming regularly, add supplements to your diet, such as Vitamin C, to counteract any possible skin problems or reactions and to boost your body?s immune system. Also, ensure your diet is balanced properly so that your body?s energy levels are not depleted and you truly benefit from the exercise. Keep your body hydrated at all times, before and after swimming, with lots of water and fruit juice. This is particularly important in summer, with the high humidity in this region, and swimming might make you feel your skin is sufficiently hydrated, whereas you might need more water intake.

Computer Programming for All: A New Standard of Literacy

#Computer #Programming for All: A New Standard of Literacy: Everyone ought to be able to read and write; few people within the global mainstream would argue with that statement. But should everyone be able to program computers? The question is becoming critically important as digital technology plays an ever more central role in daily life. The movement to make code literacy a basic tenet of education is gaining momentum, and its success or failure will have a huge impact on our society.

CyanogenMod 9 gives your Galaxy Nexus a glass slipper, it will go to the GSIII ball

If the arrival of the GS III has placed a dent in your "latest Galaxy" street-cred, help is at hand. Once again it's the fine folk at XDA-Developers who come up with the goods, in the form of a CM9 add-on pack for the apparently passé Galaxy Nexus. Included in the bundle are all the leaked goodies from Samsung's latest flagship so far (including a working S Voice), as well as a TouchWiz launcher for added authenticity, plus a few other treats for good measure. While designed for CM9, it's believed it may also work with other, similar ROMs. It's available just in time for the real-deal release, so no one (well those with a very untrained eye, at least) need ever know your dirty little secret.

Apple looking to hire engineers at Israel R&D facility

We've heard that Apple intends to step up hiring at a new research center in Israel, and here is more evidence of that effort. Two new job listings have appeared on Apple's site for physical design engineers in Haifa, Israel, showing that Apple is getting serious about building out its new R&D center.

These engineers will work on designs for "system-on-a-chip" implementations. Which, of course, is exactly the kind of technology that Apple is so good at stuffing into tiny mobile devices. The open positions are high level placements, with job requirements that expect to see these SoC designs from beginning to end. It'll probably take Apple a while to fill these positions with the right people, so we likely won't see actual chips come out of these facilities for a while. But the company clearly has an eye forward to making the site there an important one for Apple's future devices.

Kentwood shuts down Puyallup for championship | 4A Baseball

Originally published May 26, 2012 at 10:33 PM | Page modified May 26, 2012 at 10:57 PM

PASCO ? When Taylor Jones fired the final two-seam fastball of his high-school career, it went right where the Kentwood pitcher wanted, skirting across the outside corner of the plate.

When he saw the ball snap into catcher Reese McGuire's glove, Jones pumped his right fist. He spiked his glove. Then he launched his 6-foot-7 frame into his catcher's arms before being covered in Conquerors celebrating a 4-1 victory over No. 3 Puyallup in the Class 4A state title game Saturday night at Gesa Stadium.

"You can't dream of a better ending, going seven innings, striking out eight in the game," said Jones, who helped Kentwood claim its second title in three years. "It was amazing."

With his team's title hopes in his hands, Jones delivered. He allowed one run on four hits despite dealing with a groin injury that forced him to leave his last start ? against Redmond in the quarterfinals ? early.

"Taylor just pitched the game of his life," Kentwood coach Mark Zender said. "It was one of the best high-school performances I've seen in any sport."

Zender made up three different lineup cards before the game, because he didn't know if Jones would be able to pitch. After going through physical therapy all week, Jones decided to test his groin about 15 minutes before the game.

He was supposed to go three or four innings. The second-ranked Conquerors (25-2) had help ready in the bullpen, but Jones went all seven, shutting down the Vikings (22-6).

"I was just feeling it," he said. "I couldn't stop."

Jones also delivered on offense with run-scoring singles in the first and third innings, helping Kentwood take an early lead.

In the final frame, Zender asked Jones how he was feeling. The coach said he was thinking about bringing in senior Lucas Gately.

"Let's close it with Lucas," Zender said.

"No," Jones said. "I'm in."

He finished what he started. And, when it was over, he shared with his teammates, the guys who did the little things to help secure a championship.

"We're a fundamental team," Zender said. "We kind of play the old-fashioned way and they've bought into that. It's just been wonderful. They're a wonderful group of kids. They've done everything that we've asked them to do."

Third-place game

Richland 10, Beamer 7

Richland sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored six runs to take a commanding lead, but the fourth-ranked Bombers had to withstand a late Beamer rally to claim the Class 4A third-place trophy.

Trailing by eight heading into the seventh, the No. 10 Titans (18-8) rallied for five runs, including Daniel Lee's two-run single that cut the deficit to three with one out in the final frame.

With two on and the potential game-tying run at the plate, Richland junior Nate Ruane struck out both batters he faced to seal the win for Richland (22-6).

Affogato ? Heavenly Coffee & Ice Cream ...

Just when we?d all given up on summer following the wettest April on record and a dull, cold and miserable May ? the sun decided to make a comeback. And hey! What a comeback. The temperature has soared, the sky is blue with not a cloud in sight, and the garden has burst into a riot of colour. When the sun is hot and I want to take a break on a deckchair in the garden then there is no treat that pleases me as much as an?affogato.

Regular readers of this blog will know of my coffee addiction; that I?ll walk an extra mile for a good coffee ? as found at Taylor St Baristas in Richmond, or New Row Coffee in Covent Garden. If you read my posts from Rome in March, you?ll also know of my love of ice cream and how being in Rome means at least one?gelato a day from one of the many fabulous gelaterias there. Therefore, it goes without saying that affogato is one thing The Single Gourmet Traveller can never resist: ice cream, literally ?drowned? (affogato) in coffee.

I first experienced ? yes, one?experiences good food and drink -?affogato in Venice about twelve years ago. These were the days of family holidays and we were there with another family, enjoying lunch in the sun in a cafe in Campo Santo Stefano, near the Accademia Bridge. I can?t remember who first spied a succession of little dishes of vanilla ice cream, accompanied by espresso shots, being delivered to a number of tables, but the coffee lovers amongst us soon decided we had to join in. All I can say is that the marriage of a good strong espresso and good vanilla ice cream is one made in heaven ? and where?affogato is concerned, I?ve never looked back.

To put it together really couldn?t be simpler. But you do need some excellent coffee and some very good ice cream to get the best experience.

I still have coffee beans from the wonderful Caffe Sant?Eustachio that I bought in Rome, so I ground enough for one cup and got my espresso machine ready to be turned on.

I then put a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream into a glass cup, turned on the coffee machine and made my espresso. Now you want to bring the two components together quickly, but if you?re serving it to others, then allow them to pour the espresso over themselves when they?re ready to eat.

Gently pour the hot coffee over the cold ice cream. As you eat the ice cream, the coffee will melt it and the two gorgeous flavours combine to make a creamy, rich, ambrosial treat. This is perhaps the easiest dessert imaginable, yet it is also one of the most wonderful.

There are issues in motion right now that I consider the most important political issues of our day and this election those are big factors in my filtering of candidates criteria:

?NDAA, the Patriot Act, TSA and all accompanying inroads against the rights of citizens in the US including the ongoing military police assault against Occupy Wall Street and peaceful protest.

?CISPA/SOPA/ACTA and all its bastard offshoots and clones.

?Wars, occupation, and military spending in the Middle East that are gutting this country and killing off the younger generation of soldiers either in the field or when they suicide either in the field or after returning home.

?The ?war on drugs.? Which is contributing substantially and not in a good way to the militarization of police forces at home in conjunction with the ?war on terror.?

As far as I am concerned, there are no more pressing issues right here, right now, in play in politics.

?

Ron Paul and I don?t see eye to eye on everything. Given other options, I?d want Dennis Kucinich. But there are no other options and Dennis Kucinich is not on the ballot and the next best choice is Ron Paul.

Ron Paul will pull us out of the wars, occupations, and nation building that are bleeding this country dry, not only of years to come of its gross national product, but of the lives of young soldiers dying daily not just from enemy fire, but suicide as a result of the damage done to them by these wars. And not two or three or five or fifteen years from now. NOW. He?ll un-write indefinite detention [NDAA] of American Citizens; He?ll kill the Patriot Act and unwarranted searches and wiretapping; He?ll dismantle the groping and ever reaching TSA; He?ll stop the ongoing police assault on peaceful protesters in the Occupy movement and the militarization of domestic police forces; He?ll end the insane war on drugs that has made the US the world leader in private [for profit] prisons and incarceration of citizens; And he?ll stop the ongoing and perpetual assault on a free and functioning internet that show up daily in the forms of SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, and more recently CISPA. Add to this he does not believe in the ongoing assault on whistle blowers and Bradley Manning might just see the sky again someday if Ron Paul is elected president and the ongoing world wide witch hunt for Julian Assange might stop. And, he?ll stop the drones. Which are killing civilians every day overseas, and coming to your neighborhood street corner any day soon if either Obama or Romney are voted into office.

That?s a lot of reasons to vote for Ron Paul.

?

People shove a lot of objections at me on the Ron Paul argument:

He?s a racist!

Um. Right. One number:

35,948

That?s the DAILY AVERAGE OF PEOPLE ARRESTED IN THE US EVERY DAY. It?s a fucking huge number. The majority of those arrests are for non-violent drug crimes. And the majority of them, poor or of color, will go on to join the vast, near-voiceless crowd of 2.3 million incarcerated Americans. And what will most of them have in common? They will be poor people of color. So don?t talk to me about racism. The one presidential candidate who is trying to take Black America off the prison block, which appears to have replaced the slave block, may have a few personal foibles about whom he wants to invite over for Thanksgiving dinner, but he?s trying to do something that will be of more value to the communities of color in this country than any other candidate is. He?s trying to end the drug war. Which is not incarcerating White America. It is incarcerating Black America.

?

Then there is the abortion issue. Ron Paul doesn?t like abortion! Okay. So what? He?s the president. That is the executive branch, not the legistlative or judiciary branch.

[For fuck's sake, learn your branches!]

The president doesn?t get to outlaw abortion. He doesn?t get to outlaw anything. All he can do is veto laws coming through he does not approve of, or, suggest lawmakers make laws he might like to see, or, in some cases, really strong arm his party to create laws. But he doesn?t make laws. Ever. Because. He?s not the branch of government that makes Law.

I think Obama was kind of counting on the public citizenry getting this when he just sat there doing nothing during the whole health care thing. Or at least his handlers were. But at this point, everyone is so used to treating the president like a king, I?m not sure the general public actually knows ~ The President does not write laws.

Because, Hello, the president is not the law making branch of government.

?

Then there is the argument, but he gets to name new Supreme Court members. Yeah he does. I used to fall for that one too. Also, a little late for that, Bush WAS in office EIGHT YEARS. AHHH! But yes. Naming the Supreme Court peeps is major. Unless the Supreme Court and Federal Government are not in charge of EVERYTHING.

Maybe this is something you have been missing. The president can actually say, Hey, the Supreme Court doesn?t get to rule on this issue. [Didn't know that one did you? Any president since Roe vs. Wade could have killed Roe vs. Wade. All they had to do was say, This is not the purvue of the the Supreme Court. They didn't though, did they? Think about that one if you voted for a president because you thought he was anti-abortion. He lied to you. He could have ended it any day. And he didn't.] This is, from a pro-choice perspective, actually the real danger of a Paul presidency. He does know how that works. He can nullify Roe vs. Wade. And, being one of the men in DC who actually knows how that all works? And being anti choice? He might do it.

However. He?s a constitutionalist. Every vote he makes is about whether the federal government should be imposing or overriding state law. He might overturn Roe vs. Wade. But he won?t walk storm troopers into any state that makes abortion legal.

As things stand now, if anyone on the federal level were to overturn Roe vs. Wade, the establishment would.

This is what I think people often do not get about Paul. His stances on any issue are always, should this be federally imposed? Should the federal government be imposing this, and capable of taking this away, or should this be up to states, period? That?s his stance on civil rights, that?s his stance on abortion, if you give that right to the federal government, it can be taken away from all people at any time, if you hold it with the state, you have some input and ability to change it sans the National Guard and/or drones attacking.

And, if you think about it, it doesn?t matter if Roe vs. Wade is still hovering on the brink of extinction in federal court if your state makes it nearly or entirely impossible to obtain an abortion despite it being federally legal. [Which is happening in a load of states.] So maybe if we stop worrying about the federal government dictating this and start pushing on a state level for choice, you and I can make our states allow choice. [Also Ron Paul is the only candidate in the Republican primary debates who, during a discussion about this when the "ABORTION PILL!" came up in discussion said, "Well don't be stupid that is just birth control."]

Back to choice. Though it is kind of cool to have someone who will say, Don?t be stupid, that?s just birth control. [Yay for doctor candidates!]

Right now, apparently all it takes is one [more] Supreme Court judge to say no and the whole freaking country goes toes up on Roe vs. Wade. Though that might be a little optimistic, considering what else the Supreme Court, allegedly more balanced than it really was, has done recently. [Corporations are people, anyone?] In fact, if you leave something in the entire control of the federal government, that?s how it works. If the federal government goes the wrong way, and it has a lot, recently, everyone goes the wrong way. So. Which do you have more access to? Your federal government? Or your town and state? Who do you want dictating to you? That guy from South Carolina? [Sorry South Carolina but you guys have been sort of dicks recently.] Or the governor you can actually maybe talk to or put some pressure on?

?

Then there is gay marriage. ?Ron Paul is against gay marriage!? Um, no he isn?t. He doesn?t want to do it himself. He isn?t entirely down with the concept. But what he doesn?t want to do is federally control or dictate it. He thinks states should make their own laws. The end, period. And the federal government should be as hands off in this and every matter as possible. You want to make gay marriage legal in South Carolina? Go fucking boot out the bozo in South Carolina who is against it. Wait, you don?t live in South Carolina? Then go boot out the guy messing with you in your own state and let South Carolina worry about itself and boot out its own guy. This will work, state by state, if you become active instead of waiting for the federal government to do things and then relying on compromise with [sorry, but you were dicks] South Carolina.

?

Another argument: Regulation. ?Ron Paul will get rid of regulation and environmental protection agencies!? Um, well, in case you hadn?t noticed, Obama has Monsanto in charge of the FDA, Goldman Sachs in charge of banking regulation, Exelon is running nuclear regulation, BP and Haliburton and other oil entities are running oil drilling regulation, Wellpoint wrote the new health care bill, GE is in charge of job creation? do I have to keep going here or do you get the picture? The protection and regulation agencies, on top of costing the American tax payer a load of coin to operate because they keep growing and costing more, are already asylums being run by the inmates. They don?t regulate. They don?t protect. They have become antimatter agencies tearing down everything they are supposed to protect. Add to that, each industry that is allegedly being regulated, except it is being ?regulated? by double agents it sent in? [Being paid and supported on the tax payer's dime.] Each of those industries is still getting seed fund cash from the government. Big oil gets incentive cash. Nuclear companies get seed money cash. Monsanto gets seed money cash. [That was not a pun on purpose.] We are paying tax payer cash into these companies to create the very things killing us, then paying them again in the form of regulatory agencies to stop themselves after we paid their start up fees and when their own executives and lobbyists are running regulatory agencies in order to ignore any wrong doing and while the heads of these companies are swapping in and out of the presidential cabinet to ?advise? the president on how to keep it all going this way.

Which I call hell in a hand basket.

So yeah. As far as I am concerned? Tear those motherfuckers down. And then? Cut off their tax payer paid start up funds. And see how willing they are to build a new nuclear facility if it?s them, not the tax payers, who have to put out the 40 billion dollar fee to built the facility.

?

Have I addressed all objections?

Probably not.

But that is a pretty good start.

Devils make Cup finals after 3-2 win over Rangers

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Moments after sending the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 2003, Adam Henrique skated to the corner and waited to be mobbed by his teammates.

It's become a common occurrence for the 22-year-old who spent last season in the minor leagues. He notched the series winner in double overtime against Florida in Game 7 in the opening round, and did it again on Friday night in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, sending the rival New York Rangers packing for the season along the way.

And, oh, how sweet it was for the Devils.

The memory of missing the playoffs last season and the ghost of an 18-year-old wound were wiped out with a sweep of this rolling rookie's stick.

Henrique scored off a wild scramble in front at 1:03 into overtime and the Devils eliminated the Rangers 3-2 to advance to the Cup finals against the Los Angeles Kings.

"I mean, this kid's just at the right place, right time, all the time," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "The two biggest goals of the playoffs come off his stick.

"And that's not accidental."

Both goals have been followed by scrums in which teammates surround Henrique and pound on him to celebrate. It's fun, of course, but Henrique is more focused on facing the Kings in a series that will start in New Jersey on Wednesday.

"There's still more things to accomplish," said Henrique, who is a finalist for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie.

"Try to take in as much as I can this whole year. And obviously those are two huge goals, and then probably two of the biggest goals I ever scored. There's still more ahead. We're not done yet. We haven't really won anything. It's a long ride.

"Every kid dreams of playing in the Stanley Cup final. And we have a chance to win. I'm excited, and ready to get started."

After beating Florida, Philadelphia and their biggest rivals, the Rangers, only the Kings stand in the way of a fourth Cup for New Jersey.

"It feels great to get to where we are," Devils captain Zach Parise said. "As Adam said, we still have a lot of work ahead of us. But we've put ourselves in a pretty good position right now, and we've got a chance.

"We'll see what we can do."

This series win came against the Devils' most intense rival, and it was that much more enjoyable ? even to those who haven't been around the feud all that long.

"That one was like Christmas," Henrique said.

It also was needed. The Devils, after all, blew a 2-0, first-period lead and didn't want to head back to New York for a Game 7 on Sunday.

"It didn't matter how it got to overtime, we were in a good position," Parise said. "We were at home. We just needed one shot."

Actually, the Devils needed a few shots to win the game.

Henrique's winner came after Henrik Lundqvist stopped Ilya Kovalchuk twice and Alexei Ponikarovsky. The last shot was in the crease and Henrique tapped it home.

"We caught them on a line change and their defensemen were tired," said DeBoer, who was fired by Florida after missing the playoffs in his three seasons with the Panthers.

"We found a way to jam one in. That's the only way you're going to score on Lundqvist. You're not going to get a clean one. You're going to have to work for it around the net.

"And that's what we did."

Ryan Carter and Kovalchuk also scored for the Devils, whose biggest move this year was hiring DeBoer. He has more than proved his coaching ability.

Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan tallied for top-seeded New York, which had a good flurry just before New Jersey scored to end it.

The six Rangers on the ice just stayed down in disbelief and frustration. This was very much like Game 5, which the Devils won 5-3. New York carried the play after the first period and had a 35-29 edge in shots.

But when it came time for a game-deciding play to be made, it was a Devil who made it.

"When they scored, it was such an empty feeling," said Lundqvist, who said the puck took a weird bounce on the final play. "It is shocking."

Henrique overcame injury to score this one. He seemed to take a stick from Brian Boyle in the groin area late in the third and had to leave the ice.

He felt no pain after the game winner.

All the Rangers could do was bow their heads and then line up for the traditional handshake after losing to their cross-rival rivals in a series that was close.

"That's playoff hockey, and that's usually where you get an overtime goal," New York's Brandon Prust said. "Just whacking away in front of the net, getting rebounds."

The ageless Martin Brodeur, 40, kept the Devils alive in the third. He stopped a power-play shot by Brad Richards, made a save on Artem Anisimov between the circles and used his stick to deflect a pass from the boards by Carl Hagelin in the final minute just before it got to Marian Gaborik on the edge of the crease.

"There's a reason why he's the best goalie to play the game," Henrique said. "He gives us that extra confidence every night when we got him back there. He's going to give us the chance to win no matter what, even if we're not playing our best. He seems to make those big saves night in, night out, and he did it again tonight."

Lundqvist's best stop in the third was on Dainius Zubrus on a shot from behind the circles.

Facing elimination and down 2-0 after 20 minutes, the Rangers found their game in the second period and tied it at 2-all on goals by Fedotenko and Callahan in a roughly four-minute span.

Carter, who scored the game winner in New York on Wednesday after the Devils blew a 3-0 lead, put New Jersey ahead again at 10:05 of the opening period on a rebound. Kovalchuk added his seventh goal of the postseason on a power play, his fifth with the extra man.

The Devils ? as is the tradition for many Cup finalists ? did not touch the Prince of Wales Trophy that was presented at center ice. As the team skated off to their locker room, "Glory Days," the 1984 hit from New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen serenaded them.

The game was played on the 18-year anniversary of the Rangers' dramatic 4-2 Game 6 victory over New Jersey at the Meadowlands, a win that pushed that classic Eastern Conference final series to a Game 7 and eventually led New York to its first Stanley Cup in 54 years. That game, of course, was preceded by a guarantee from Rangers captain Mark Messier, who delivered three goals en route to the victory.

This time, though, there will be no Game 7.

NOTES: The Rangers became the fifth team to play 20 postseason games without reaching the finals. ... TV personality Donald Trump was at the game. ... Devils C Travis Zajac left the ice briefly in the second after being slashed on the left hand by Prust. No penalty was called. ... New Jersey is 4-1 in overtime in the postseason. New York finished 2-3 after regulation. ... This is only the second time the Devils have defeated the Rangers in the postseason in six tries. ... The last time New Jersey played in the Stanley Cup finals, the Devils also played a California team: the Anaheim Ducks in 2003.

Want to fly next to your child? Prepare to pay

Summer travel will become more costly this year now that airlines are charging more for aisle and window seats, in some cases $25 each way. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

By Elaine Porterfield , msnbc.com contributor

It?s not just enough to buy your airplane ticket anymore: Increasingly, along with checking baggage, airlines want you to pay extra to ensure a seat next to your travel companions, including your spouse or child.

That?s sure to lead to unhappiness during the coming busy summer travel season, with passengers already toting their own suitcases and carrying their own food to avoid paying additional fees. In many cases, it may cost as much as $25 ? each way ??to ensure you and your companion sit together. And last month, United Airlines ended its policy of allowing families traveling with small children to board early, USA Today reports.?

Families in coach who have small children are no longer being offered early boarding. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

It?s tough news for many summer travelers. Airlines have?successfully raised airfares?three times this year.?Business travelers are already facing fares that will likely rise this year an average of four percent in North America, according to the Egencia's 2012 Global Corporate Travel Forecast. Egencia is an Expedia, Inc. company.

Regarding the seat reservation fees, it works like this: Airlines are reserving a growing number of window and aisle seats for passengers willing to pay extra for them,?the Associated Press reports. While airlines say it's a move to?boost revenue, the policy is making it harder for friends and family members who don't pay this fee to sit next to each other. At the peak of the summer travel season, it might be nearly impossible, the AP reports.

Since last summer, American, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and United Airlines have increased the percentage of coach seats requiring some kind of extra fee. Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines charge extra for any advanced seat assignment, according to the AP.

?I think it?s going to fall flat on its face,? predicted travel psychologist Michael Brein, PhD, of Bainbridge Island, Wash. ?It?s pushing the envelope a little far for travelers. People have had it up to here with fees, and this one sounds not so well thought out to me.?

George Hobica, founder and president of the Internet travel site Airfarewatchdog, said he thinks the fees are reasonable. ?When you think about it, when you go to a theater, a Broadway play, you always pay extra for better seats. They?re doing the same thing.?

Airlines are having a tough time, Hobica points out:? ?Two of our remaining airlines lost money last quarter, and the industry as a whole had a 1.5 percent profit margin. I?m all about low airfares ? it?s been my stock in trade for almost 20 years. But the traveling public has had it good at expense of the airlines? People need to be honest and should buck up and say if they want these low fares, then the people who want special service should pay (extra) for it.?

One airline bucking the trend is the Seattle-based Alaska.

?We do not charge for priority seating, or seating together at Alaska Airlines,? said spokeswoman Marianne Lindsey. ?We do hold some seats out for last-minute booking by our elite member frequent fliers and passengers with disabilities, but in general you should be able to find seats together for your family.?

Now and again, that can be a challenge, Lindsey said.

?In some instances, however, with full flights, families may not be seated together,? she said. ?In this instance, we do all that we can to accommodate families requesting seating together, including asking if there are other travelers that would be willing to change their seats for the family. If all four cannot be seated together we try to at least get one parent with each child. Oftentimes, once families are onboard, other travelers offer to move to accommodate the family, and our flight attendants help facilitate this.?

New airline charges could be costly for families hoping to sit together on flights. WMAQ's Christian Farr reports.

Has Cory Booker hurt his own political career?

Don't look for a prime time speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention for Cory Booker, but his defense of Wall Street ? and criticism of the Obama campaign ? won't hurt his standing with moderates or Wall Street donors.

Has Cory Booker hurt his own political career? That?s a valid question in the wake of his misstep last Sunday on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.? Mr. Booker ? the Democratic mayor Newark, N.J. ? called President Obama?s anti-Bain Capital campaign ads ?nauseating." He and the Obama campaign have been in full damage-control mode ever since.

Well, one thing?s for sure ? a prime time Booker speech at the Democratic National Convention is now pretty unlikely. That would only cause the ?Meet the Press? clip to run in rotation on cable news again. So the Newark mayor, often described as a rising star, won?t get the exposure that then-little known Barack Obama did when he delivered the DNC keynote address in 2004.

Plus, his own ties to Wall Street have now become press fodder. On Monday, the liberal website Think Progress revealed that Bain officials and others in the finance industry contributed more than $565,000 to Booker?s first mayoral campaign in 2002. Stories about links between financial groups and Booker, former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, and other Democrats who criticized the Bain ads came out so fast that some on the right suspect they were planted by the Obama camp.

?I expected them to send out oppo research on Republicans.... But I don?t think I ever would?ve predicted they?d be digging up dirt on their own campaign surrogates,? wrote Ben Howe on the conservative RedState blog.

Booker?s in-state party rivals have even begun tweaking him over his misstep. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D) of New Jersey, for instance, holds a seat that Booker is rumored to want for himself. On Tuesday, Senator Lautenberg said Booker?s words were ?a terrible blow, in my view, for President Obama."
