Lebanese fighters reported killed inside Syria

MASNAA, Lebanon (AP) ? Syrian security forces killed as many as 20 Lebanese gunmen who were fighting alongside rebels in Syria on Friday, raising tensions amid mounting fears that the Syrian civil war is enflaming the region.

The Lebanese security officials said the gunmen were killed as they tried to enter the Syrian town of Tal Kalakh, near the Lebanese border. The officials asked that their names not be used because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Syrian state-run media also reported that Lebanese gunmen were killed. But the SANA report said there 17 ? not 20 ? fighters. The discrepancy could not immediately be reconciled.

The Lebanese gunmen were Sunni Muslims, as are the vast majority of Syria's rebels. Syrian President Bashar Assad ? along with his most elite troops ? belong to the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Lebanon is particularly vulnerable to getting sucked into the conflict in Syria. The countries share a complex web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries that are easily enflamed. Lebanon, a country plagued by decades of strife, has been on edge since the uprising in Syria against Assad began in March 2011, with deadly clashes between pro- and anti-Assad Lebanese groups erupting on several occasions.

The deaths came as rebels have tried to close in on the Syrian capital, Damascus, in recent days.

On Friday, Syrian soldiers fought rebels in and around the capital as Internet and most telephone lines were blacked out for a second day. But the intense battles around the country's international airport appeared to have calmed.

The airport road had reopened by Friday and the head of the Syrian Civil Aviation Agency, Ghaidaa Abdul-Latif, said the airport was operating "as usual." A day earlier, heavy fighting forced the closure of the road and airlines canceled international flights to Damascus.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and residents who were interviewed while leaving Syria on Friday said there was still sporadic fighting in pockets of the capital and on the outskirts.

A minibus driver said he heard explosions in the distance as he drove through Damascus.

"There are extreme security measures in Damascus today," said the driver, who asked to be identified only by his first name, Mohamad, out of fear for his personal safety.

"We were stopped at several checkpoints," he told The Associated Press. "Our IDs were checked and they even opened all the bags and suitcases."

He spoke as he crossed into Lebanon, driving a minibus packed with woman and children.

The communications blackout has raised fears of an explosion of fighting outside the public gaze. The Internet has been a key tool of activists over the course of the Syrian conflict, which started 20 months ago and has left more than 40,000 people dead, according to activists.

Syrian authorities previously have cut Internet and telephones in areas ahead of military operations. On Friday, some land lines were working sporadically.

In the southern part of the capital, the main road to Damascus' airport reopened early Friday afternoon, according to the Observatory. Intense clashes broke out after midnight in villages and towns near the facility but the area was calm by the late morning, the group said. It said rebels were able to destroy several army vehicles near the airport.

The Observatory, which has a network of activists around Syria, reported fighting in other southern neighborhoods of Damascus, including Tadamon and Hajar Aswad. The group said it was able to contact its sources who used satellite telephones.

According to the Observatory and witnesses who crossed into Lebanon, several suburbs ? including Aqraba, Beit Saham and Daraya ? also saw heavy fighting.

By contrast, a man who crossed into Lebanon with his wife and son said it was quiet Friday nearby in Damascus' western suburb of Zabadani ? a far cry from a day earlier, when the neighborhood was "like hell."

"The battles were flaming throughout the day," he said, asking not to be identified because he was afraid of repercussions.

But much of Thursday's violence was focused on southern suburbs near the airport. The surrounding districts have been strongholds of rebel support since the uprising began.

Two Austrian soldiers assigned to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights were wounded Thursday when their convoy came under fire on the way to the airport, Austria Press Agency said.

The two were transferred to Israel for treatment Friday and their condition is not life-threatening, said David Ratner, a spokesman for Rambam Hospital in Haifa. He said the two soldiers suffered gunshot wounds ? one to the chest and the other to the hand.

With pressure building against President Bashar Assad's regime on several fronts and government forces on their heels in the battle for the northern commercial hub of Aleppo, rebels have recently begun pushing back into Damascus after largely being driven out of the capital following a July offensive. One Damascus resident reported seeing rebel forces near a suburb of the city previously deemed to be safe from fighting.

Regime forces have suffered a string of tactical defeats in recent weeks, losing air bases and other strategic facilities. The government may be trying to blunt additional rebel offensives by hampering communications.

Analysts say the regime appears to be the culprit for the Internet outage. Syria has several cables that connect it to the outside world, and all of them would have had to be cut at once for a complete outage.

As the rebels and government vie for the upper hand in an increasingly bloody struggle, the conflict's toll on civilians is worsening.

The U.N. refugee agency said Friday it found desperate conditions in the Syrian city of Homs, where thousands of people are living in unheated shelters and a quarter of a million people are displaced from their homes.

An assessment team visiting this week saw half of the city's hospitals shut down and "severe shortages of basic supplies ranging from medicine to blankets, winter clothes and children's shoes," agency spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said.

As the violence rages, Syria's neighbors are increasingly being drawn into the country's civil war in a variety of ways, whether militarily or as a result of an exodus of Syrians fleeing the fighting.

Syria is believed to have several hundred ballistic surface-to-surface missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads ? a particular concern for Turkey, a NATO member.

On Friday, NATO said it will deploy Patriot missiles to Turkey's border with Syria "within several weeks" after the move is approved.

Spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said a team assessing possible sites for the air defense systems is making good progress and is expected to report back soon. This opens the possibility that foreign ministers of the 28 member countries, meeting in Brussels on Tuesday and Wednesday, could make the final decision.

Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. have the advanced PAC-3 model Patriots that Turkey needs to intercept ballistic missiles. Parliaments in Germany and the Netherlands must also approve the deployment.

"Homeland" in, "Boardwalk Empire" out in PGA TV nominations

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Emmy-winning dramas "Homeland", "Mad Men" and British period piece "Downton Abbey" will compete for the annual Producers Guild Awards for the top shows on U.S. television, organizers announced on Wednesday.

But last year's winner - HBO's lavish Prohibition-era gangster drama "Boardwalk Empire" - failed to make the cut this year with the Producers Guild of America, one of the leading professional guilds in Hollywood.

Instead, the producers of popular fantasy drama "Game of Thrones" and drug underworld show "Breaking Bad" round out the nominees for the top PGA prize in television.

The PGA also nominated the producers of comedies "Modern Family", "The Big Bang Theory", "Louie", "30 Rock" and Larry David's wry "Curb Your Enthusiasm" as contenders for its 2013 awards on the small screen.

In the reality genre, singing contest "The Voice" will go head to head with fashion show "Project Runway", "Top Chef", "Dancing with the Stars" and Emmy darling "The Amazing Race".

Hollywood's guilds represent professionals in their respective industries, and recognition by peers can go a long way toward boosting a producer's career.

The PGA will announce nominees in its closely watched movie category in early January, and hand out its awards for film and television at a ceremony in Hollywood on January 26.

Basis fitness tracker finally goes on sale for $199, mobile apps still MIA

Basis Band fitness tracker finally goes on sale priced at $199, mobile apps still MIA

Remember the Basis Band, that fitness-tracking wristband that was supposed to come out earlier this year? Well, the company obviously missed its target for an "early 2012" launch, but it's been busy refining the product and publishing intermittent blog posts to let people know how the device has been shaping up. Well, at last, it's ready for prime time: the band is on sale today, priced at $199, as originally planned.

In case you're just hearing about Basis for the first time, here's a quick recap: unlike Nike Fuelband and other devices aimed at athletes, Basis is attempting to lure in more mainstream users with the ability to set goals and get rewarded for staying on track. (Other devices, including the new Jawbone Up, do this too.) What's interesting, though, is that for a device that claims to target the everyman over the nerd it actually collects an impressive amount of data. For instance, the "Patterns" view in the web console will show not just how many steps you take throughout the day, but which hours of the day you were most active. The band, meanwhile, tracks sweat output, heat dissipation, blood flow and heart rate -- something we can't say about all those other fitness trackers. As for the UI, the site itself is visually pleasing, though some mobile apps would also be nice. (A Basis rep says they're working on it.)

If anything, the product's simplicity comes from the hardware: like other new fitness trackers, it uses Bluetooth 4.0 to transmit all your data to the cloud so that you don't have to sync over USB. Basically, between that and those various sensors, the band should theoretically detect when you're sleeping or exercising so that you don't have to switch modes or enter any information manually. It's worth noting, though, that other fitness trackers mainly stumble when it comes to logging food intake -- something sensors can't detect -- and that's not even something the Basis band covers right now. In other words, it's easy to praise a device for working automatically when it completely bypasses the whole diet piece of the wellness equation. According to Basis, research suggests people don't really use these food-logging tools anyway. We can believe that, actually, though for $199 it would be nice to at least have the option, no? That's another thing: at two hundred bucks this is considerably pricier than competing devices, including the Up band ($129) and the new Fitbit One ($100). Even so, the user experience is everything, isn't it? If you've ever been food-judged by Up, or if the Basis band really is as low-maintenance as it seems, it could still be worth a gander.

First Trip to Washington DC - Ravens @ Redskins (Sunday 9th December)

Hello to all on the forum. Long time reader... 1st time thread starter.
Apologies if there are similar threads... but i was hoping for some tips. I am flying over to D.C next Friday for my first visit to your nations capital, and will after 20 years of support... finally be seeing The Redskins in a live game.

We are staying at The Hyatt on New Jersey Avenue, so very centrally. There are of course the obvious sights in D.C, which we will take in, but i was hoping to get your tips on places to eat and drink around the area. Any places we must check out or should definately avoid. It would be great to get some first hand knoweldge of the place, rather than rely on wikitravel!

Also in terms of the game itself. Kick-Off i believe is 1pm local time. When do the gates open?
Additionally... are there many club shops in the stadium vacinity or inside the stadium itself that we could buy merchanside from.? I think we are a few blocks down from the Hooters Bar in Block three hundred and something... so we will check that out also. But i wanted to make sure i got the best possible experience pre-match as i can. When do fans generally tend to arrive? (being a "soccer" fan... we tend to arrive at the ground five minutes before the kick off after 5 hours in the pub!... so i wonder if it was any different?!)

After the game finishes... is there any bars that fans will generally head to to take in the later games or to socialize and have a beer?

Sorry for the many questions... but i would be really grateful for any advice that you could give.

Let just hope that we can beat those Giants and have a real shot at winning the division. I will be watching... at 1am local time in London

HAIL!

Humax's take on an IPconnected TV box for Comcast passes through the FCC

Comcast isn't opening up its set-top boxes (UI and all) in the way we'd like, but it has established a reference spec (RDK) for potential hardware partners to build their own versions of its next generation setup. As reported by Light Reading, Cisco, Humax, Pace, Technicolor and others are working on hardware for a new multiroom setup based on a central gateway (or maybe a Cablevision-style network DVR) that streams video to IP-connected extenders called the XI3. Now Humax's Xfinity-branded XI3-H has been revealed in an FCC filing spotted by Wireless Goodness. It sports a coax in/out connection for MoCA and TV, HDMI in and out, Ethernet and a USB port for a WiFi adapter. There's also an SD card slot interestingly, which could potentially be used as local DVR storage for quick pause and rewind without pulling from the main server.

How To Boost Morale In A Virtual Workplace - Business Insider

SAP

This post is part of the "Future of Business" series, which examines how cutting-edge technologies are rapidly reshaping our world, from how businesses run to how we live. "The Future of Business" is sponsored by SAP.

One of the most dominant trends in the workplace is the rise of the virtual team. Whether by design or necessity, more and more people are working outside the office but on the same sorts of multi-person long term projects with the same demands for teamwork as always.

For insight, we spoke to Katherine Graham-Leviss, the founder of XBInsights, a data-based talent assessment and coaching company which itself has a network of coaches that work virtually.?

By far the most important thing is that managers know the members of their virtual teams, and put the time in to know how they like to communicate in that environment. They can use that information to motivate them and avoid the behavioral pitfalls that occur in a virtual environment.?

Below is a lightly edited transcript of our conversation:

How can employers motivate employees when they have less face time?

There are a couple of consistencies that I see in this, and one, it's really about communications skills. Oftentimes people don't have good communication skills and its a real issue, and the other thing that I see, it's tough virtually for executives that we deal with to keep their finger on the pulse of what people are doing without constantly calling people. I think that communication piece is really critical.

The kind of work that I do and where I really get involved is in that communication piece and really helping leaders understand each of their direct reports' real communications preferences and needs, because once they understand those things, they can be much more effective in reading, guiding, directing, and motivating each individual. I think it's really up to the leader or the manager to really understand those communication preferences of each individual and put those into action.

Are there certain communications issues that execs have that are amplified in a virtual setting??

I think that there are a couple of things that happen. So for example, a lot of times, there's email communication in a virtual environment. Email communications get misread. Things aren't conveyed in the proper way because you can't see the body language of people and the visual cues, and so a lot of times information will be miscommunicated. Especially, and this is probably more obvious, in situations where there may be conflict.

Are there particular steps that can be taken to avoid Miscommunication?

Some people prefer ? and are comfortable with ? email communication. Others need verbal communication and interaction. And others need a combination of both of those things, and so the work that I do is really around understanding the communication preferences of each individual and what works best for each individual, because we've found that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work.?

So the best thing to motivate and boost morale is being aware of individual preferences?

That's right. You have to a have a communication strategy that really caters to each individual in order to be truly effective.

Is there a particular communications strategy that's best for motivating virtual teams?

I will tell you that if you have any visual communication technology, it's really much more effective. In the absence of more high tech options, a lot of our teams are using Skype and any technology like that where they can get some of that visual communication and interaction. ...[O]ur team does of a lot of forward work, so we tend to be good listeners, good phone communicators, but not everybody is. As a matter of fact, most people aren't. And so, any time you can take advantage of that type of technology, you should, more and more. My team is asked to do global coaching and we use that technology in the absence of any high tech stuff.

Are there additional issues with high maintenance team members with less face time?

My definition of a high maintenance employee would also be somebody who's a high performer. In that case what happens is you have to really clearly communicate the expectations and be on the same page with them. What they tend to do is anything to get the results. They'll break the rules, they'll plow over other people. They're so driven that they tend not to think about how other people might be thinking or receiving the way in which they communicate, and that's why I think that it's so important ? for that person in particular ? that there's consistent and open communication with very clear feedback and expectations. The issue with those kinds of people is that they don't want to be evaluated on the process, they want to be evaluated on the fact that they got the result, so they like autonomy, but there's got to be some clear communication and guidelines so they don't create a mess.

Once leaders understand that they have to set those guidelines and those boundaries then even managing high maintenance, high performance employees becomes easier.

How can you find the best people for a virtual team and keep them motivated?

I think that not everybody's built to work virtually. A lot of our coaches who have been with me 9 and 10 years work out of their homes. And there are some who need to go to an office every day, so we've set up offices even though as a team we work virtually, because they need to go to that office; it's too difficult for them to work in their home setting. A lot of times we're looking at scientific assessment data because we're using our profile system to hire people.?The data can point to, not will somebody work well in a virtual team, but can they work well independently, and what is it that they really need. Some people really need that people interaction, some people need that structure. If they're in a virtual environment and we know those things, we can better set them up for success.?

So find the data, know your people, and build some structure for them?

That's right. And find some consistency in how you interact with them.

How do you plan with having to work unexpectedly as a virtual team?

I see this one all the time. I have a client ? we were just talking about this ? that there are certain people who are very good at multitasking and they can work [on] the road, but what ends up happening when you have a team doing that and they're out of the office a lot is that everybody has their own individual agendas, and there's a lack of communication and all of the consistent team types of communication fall to the wayside because everybody's traveling. It really becomes a big issue. And with a lack of a plan and a strategy and check ins and checkpoints and virtual staff communications that [are] mandatory, it really becomes a problem, so there's got to be a communication plan for how people are expected to interact and show up and communicate when everybody's on the road.

So when it comes to keeping a virtual team motivated, structure can be even more important?

Yes.?

DIY Small Business Marketing ? What You Can Learn From Bob Vila ...

Fall is a popular time for home renovation projects, as home owners gear up for the holiday season. Design choices and creative ideas abound for today?s renovators, thanks in large part to platforms, such as Pinterest and DIY yourself websites.

One look at Bob Vila?s website will cause an eager renovator to salivate with excitement over the plethora of advice for any and every project under the sun. While perusing these tips, a lightbulb went off in my head: There are striking similarities between a small business and your home? both need constant care and maintenance and can always use an upgrade now and again.

With that in mind, there are three DIY small business marketing tips to be learned from the dean of home renovation and repair:

1. Regular Maintenance is a Must? Many small business folks jump into marketing projects with great gusto in the beginning. They set up a Facebook and Twitter account, they research local advertising, and perhaps even place an article in their local newspaper.

Small business marketing, like home upkeep is an ongoing process. Much like you cannot install a new air conditioning unit and never have a service check; you cannot set up social media accounts and leave them to gather Internet cobwebs. Once you?ve created channels for communication, keep a content marketing schedule to help you manage the process.

Some suggested efforts and frequencies:

  • Update your blog at least once a week
  • Create a regular press release distribution schedule
  • Use your Twitter account to continually share new deals and offers
  • Add to your Facebook page twice a week?bonus points if you post something once a day

2.?Open Your Small Business Marketing to New Possibilities?Sometimes moving a wall to open up a room is all it takes to give it a whole new look. Vila says having an open mind about floor plans pays off tenfold for renovation-minded homeowners. The same is true for small business marketing.

Translate this concept into your digital marketing floor plan. Open up the walls of your established efforts by incorporating new ideas, such as:

  • Have you only used local advertising to get the word out about your business? Try creating press releases that target your local audience with pertinent news about your business.
  • If you?ve shied away from content marketing via social media up until now, take a few minutes to browse through Facebook to see how other small business owners are using the network to boost their results.
  • Looking for more ways to create a relationship with customers? Consider inviting the community to publicize their special events at your business or co-sponsor them. Business is all about give and take.

3.?Gut Out the Old and Bring in the New?Is your current marketing plan just not working? A fresh start may be in order, which would call for a complete revamp of your marketing foundation. Vila is a proponent of careful planning before gutting and you should be, as well.

While ?gutting? your old plan, keep the three D?s in mind:

  • Decide which tactics worked well for your business. If they are solid staples, keep them in your new plan.
  • Determine if you?ve missed an audience and then find ways to attract them through social media.
  • Do an overhaul of your content marketing topics. There are multiple ways to stay engaged with consumers and providing fresh, relevant information is at the top of the list.

Not only does Bob Vila offer sound advice, he also lends an enthusiastic spirit of creativity and passion to his projects, which rub off on his followers. You can do the same with your marketing efforts and have your passion for your business and industry rubs off on your customers.

Handaxes of 1.7 million years ago: 'Trust rather than lust' behind fine details

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Trust rather than lust is at the heart of the attention to detail and finely made form of handaxes from around 1.7 million years ago, according to a University of York researcher.

Dr Penny Spikins, from the Department of Archaeology, suggests a desire to prove their trustworthiness, rather than a need to demonstrate their physical fitness as a mate, was the driving force behind the fine crafting of handaxes by Homo erectus/ergaster in the Lower Palaeolithic period.

Dr Spikins said: "We sometimes imagine that early humans were self-centred, and if emotional at all, that they would have been driven by their immediate desires. However, research suggests that we have reason to have more faith in human nature, and that trust played a key role in early human societies. Displaying trust not lust was behind the attention to detail and finely made form of handaxes."

The 'trustworthy handaxe theory' is explained in an article in World Archaeology and contrasts sharply with previous claims that finely crafted handaxes were about competition between males and sexual selection.

Dr Spikins said: "Since their first recovery, the appealing form of handaxes and the difficulty of their manufacture have inspired much interest into the possible 'meaning' of these artefacts. Much of the debate has centred on claims that the attention to symmetrical form and the demonstration of skill would have played a key role in sexual selection, as they would have helped attract a mate eager to take advantage of a clear signal of advantageous genes.

"However, I propose that attention to form is much more about decisions about who to trust; that it can be seen as a gesture of goodwill or trustworthiness to others. The attention to detail is about showing an ability to care about the final form, and by extension, people too.

"In addition, overcoming the significant frustrations of imposing form on stone displays considerable emotional self-control and patience, traits needed for strong and enduring relationships."

Handaxes, or bifaces, appeared around 1.7 million years ago in Africa and spread throughout the occupied world of Africa, Europe and western Asia, functioning primarily as butchery implements. Handaxe form remained remarkably similar for more than a million years.

Dr Spikins said: "Trust is essential to all our relationships today, and we see the very beginnings of the building blocks of trust in other apes. The implication that it was an instinct towards trust which shaped the face of stone tool manufacture is particularly significant to our understanding of Lower Palaeolithic societies. It sets a challenge for research into how our emotions, rather than our complex thinking skills, made us human.

"As small vulnerable primates in risky environments where they faced dangerous predators our ancestors needed to be able to depend on each other to survive -- displaying our emotional capacities was part of forming trusting relationships with the kind of 'give and take' that they needed."

Dr Spikins points to other higher primates, particularly chimpanzees, as well as modern human hunter-gatherers to back up her theory of trustworthiness.

"Long-term altruistic alliances in both chimpanzees and humans are forged by many small unconscious gestures of goodwill, or acts of altruism, such as soothing those in distress or sharing food," said Dr Spikins.

"As signals of trustworthiness, these contribute to one's reputation, and in hunter-gatherers reputation can be the key to survival, with the most trustworthy hunters being looked after most willingly by the others when they are ill or elderly.

"The form of a handaxe is worth considerable effort, as it may demonstrate trustworthiness not only in its production, but also each time it is seen or re-used, when it might remind others of the emotional reliability of its maker."

Guest Post: Top Security Tips For Using Public Wi-Fi

Ed. Note: Tim Sohn?s post about places freelancers can access free Wi-Fi proved pretty popular even before Superstorm Sandy, but Reese has a good point about security. Read on for her tips about keeping your data secure while surfing on public Wi-Fi. Do you use any of these strategies? Or do you know of others? Leave a comment and let us know!

By Reese Jones

Public Wi-Fi can be a great way to get online, often for free, while you?re out and about. More and more people are making good use of their local Wi-Fi hotspots when using their smartphones or laptop computers. However, others are still wary of using public Wi-Fi due to the associated security risks. If you want to be able to access the internet using public Wi-Fi while keeping your personal data safe and secure, then here are a few tips to bear in mind.

One of the easiest ways to protect your computer when using pubic Wi-Fi is to make sure that your firewall is turned on. Most operating systems will already have a basic firewall installed, but it may not automatically be enabled. Although your firewall won?t offer complete protection, it can offer a degree of security when accessing public Wi-Fi networks.

In addition, you should also try to use SSL encrypted sites whenever possible. HTTPS and SSL connections encrypt data sent to and from a web server, so it becomes unreadable to hackers ? something which can prove particularly important when entering passwords and other confidential information. Although most websites that require you to enter information will be automatically encrypted, it is worth double-checking to make sure the site URL starts with https:// rather than just http://, as this indicates a higher level of security.

If possible, it is always a good idea to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN), as this will encrypt all information which you send and receive, even when you use an unsecured public Wi-Fi connection. In effect, you will have the security of a private network, even when using a public internet connection. Some businesses provide employees with their own VPN, especially if they might be required to work while on the move. However, if your employer doesn?t have a VPN for you to use, sites such as anchorfree.com also offer Hotspot Shield, a downloadable app which ensures VPN security settings are always in place.

Your computer?s file and printer sharing capabilities can make you much more vulnerable to hackers when using public Wi-Fi. When at home or in an office, this feature allows you to share files and printer systems between more than one computer. However, by leaving sharing enabled when using public Wi-Fi, others using the same network may be able to access your private data more easily, especially if it is not password-protected. Simply disable the file and printer sharing feature to stay secure.

It is also a good idea to double-check the name of the Wi-Fi connection you are planning to use. Hackers have been known to use ?evil twin? networks, which use a similar name to the one you were hoping to connect to, and are designed purely to collect passwords and data. Whether you?re accessing Wi-Fi at a restaurant, train station or caf?, it can be worth finding out the exact name of the Wi-Fi network which they provide. The Wi-Fi connection is likely to be even more secure if you are required to give a password to gain access to the network.

Although Wi-Fi hotspots are often pleasant places to work, you may find that you do not always need to connect to the Wi-Fi network for the entire duration of your stay. If this is the case, then it can certainly be well worth turning off the wireless when you?re not using it in order to ensure your security. You may not have actively connected to a particular Wi-Fi network, but leaving your Wi-Fi enabled still leaves your computer vulnerable when in a public Wi-Fi hotspot.

Lastly, it is also a good idea to be aware of the more physical risks of using public Wi-Fi. When you go online in a public place, you run the risk of having other looking over your shoulder and reading what?s on your screen. Take care that these peeping Toms (and Tomasinas) don?t see you typing in any passwords or credit card details. It can be a good idea to avoid accessing sensitive material altogether when using public Wi-Fi connections, and to keep your wits about you when entering confidential information.

How Israel's 'Iron Dome' intercepts incoming rockets in Gaza conflict

6 hrs.

As the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continues along the Gaza?border, Israelis have been putting to use an anti-rocket defense system called "Iron Dome" meant to intercept Palestinian?rockets that are headed?for major population centers. Along with its tally of "terror target" strikes, the Israel Defense Forces' Twitter feed has announced the number of incoming?rockets grounded by the system.

Iron Dome is actually a nickname for the "Dual-Mission Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar and Very Short Range Air Defense System," a missile?battery?that works with?sensors?to detect and intercept short- to medium-range threats like rockets. It was?commissioned by Israel in 2007 following a year in which the country endured thousands of missile attacks, mainly concentrated in the country's?northern region.

Built by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the full??system is?made up of three parts, all of which are relatively portable.?

A radar unit watches for threats in a radius up to about 40?miles.?

Information on spotted projectiles is passed to a Battle Management and Control truck, where the information is evaluated and the command is given to either intercept or ignore. The projectile data is then passed to the interceptor unit, which launches a missile programmed to cross paths with the incoming rocket or shell, and detonate it in a way that is as harmless as possible.?

This week,?Iron Dome has been up against the rockets fired by the Qassam Brigades, the?military faction of Hamas, the?Islamist political party and militant group that has been governing the Gaza Strip separately from the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority since 2007.

The rockets are crude, technologically speaking. Little more than an explosive charge attached to the end of a tube of propellant, they have not evolved much from the "buzz bombs" used by the Germans during World War II. While this means the rockets can be manufactured and deployed in great numbers, it also means that they have a relatively?slow, ballistic trajectory that is an easy target for a fast-moving, guided missile.

Each missile fired from an Iron Dome unit costs around $40,000, but the cost appears to be offset by effectiveness. The Israel?Defense Force has previously stated?that as many as?85 percent of the enemy?rockets can be intercepted. However, the?current bombardment is more intense than previous situations when the Iron Dome was in use, and in one instance, the effectiveness reported by Israel was closer to?75 percent.?As of Friday evening,?current estimates. based on IDF reports.?place rockets fired into Israeli territory at just over 600, with nearly 250 reported to be?shot down by Iron Dome missiles.

That may sound like a far cry from 85 percent accuracy, but the Iron Dome batteries simply ignore?projectiles that are predicted to land in unpopulated areas like farmland or water. So while hundreds of rockets have been allowed to strike Israeli soil, comparatively few of them are causing serious damage or casualties.

The U.S. partly bankrolled?the development of Iron Dome, beginning with a?$200 million request by President Obama?in 2010, later approved by Congress. As much or more is currently being considered for inclusion with other defense spending, though it may be contingent on a technology-sharing agreement between Israel and the?U.S. Israel introduced Iron Dome in March 2011, and it intercepted its first enemy rocket that April. ?

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC?News Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

Gordon's anger at Bowyer dates back 7 months

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) ? When Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon made contact in the closing laps at Phoenix, Gordon was overcome by a grudge he'd been carrying at least seven months.

The four-time NASCAR champion retaliated by intentionally wrecking Bowyer, triggering a garage-area melee.

Gordon's reputation took a hit among his peers and he was fined $100,000 by NASCAR. But he avoided suspension and will race Sunday in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he'll celebrate his 20th anniversary with sponsor DuPont and Hendrick Motorsports.

He admitted Friday that DuPont had initial concerns NASCAR would park him this weekend for his actions Sunday at Phoenix, but he never worried he wouldn't race at Homestead and he's not sorry for wrecking Bowyer.

"The thing that I regret and the thing that I messed up on is that I allowed my anger and my emotions to put me in a position to make a bad choice," Gordon said. "I felt like Clint needed to be dealt with, but that wasn't the right way to go about it, certainly not the right time. And what I hate most about it is that other guys were involved with it and it affected their day."

The wreck collected Joey Logano and Aric Almirola, and championship points leader Brad Keselowski had to dodge his way around the accident scene. It also triggered a brawl in the garage between Gordon's crew and Bowyer's crew that has received as much attention as the championship race between Keselowski and five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson.

It has also thrust the 41-year-old Gordon into the headlines at the end of yet another disappointing season.

He was docked 25 points for Sunday's bad behavior, which dropped him to 11th in the Sprint Cup Series standings in this one-win season. He hasn't won a championship since 2001, and teammate Johnson, who came on board in 2002, will race for his sixth title Sunday.

So his actions on Sunday were certainly that of a frustrated driver, and he admitted wrecking Bowyer sent a message to the garage.

"I don't think they're going to be messing with me for a little while. I think they realize that that message was sent pretty clear," Gordon said. "Throughout the last couple years, I feel like one thing that maybe I haven't done enough of is show the fire inside me that I have to want to win and want to win championships. And I think that while I would have liked to have gone about it differently on Sunday, I think it did show that that fire and passion is inside of me in a big way."

So big that he'd been angry with Bowyer since Martinsville in April, when Bowyer played a role in costing Hendrick Motorsports its 200th victory.

The race had been dominated that day by Gordon and Johnson, and a late caution had set up a restart with the teammates lined up side-by-side at the front. Bowyer re-started in the second row, on new tires, and got a shove from behind from Ryan Newman. He dove to the inside of Gordon and Johnson, made contact, and all three wrecked.

It was a crushing defeat for the Hendrick camp, which was moments away from celebrating a historic victory at Martinsville, site of some of the team's most significant triumphs and its most heartbreaking tragedy. A Hendrick plane crashed en route to a 2004 race at Martinsville, among the 10 people on board were Hendrick's brother, son, twin nieces, key team personnel and a DuPont representative.

At the April race with Hendrick, for the first time since the 2004 plane crash, were the widows of Hendrick's brother and the DuPont executive.

"We were all wanting to win more than anything, more than any championship. The 200th win at Martinsville meant so much to all of us because we lost so much there," Hendrick said Friday. "And that was taken away from us. Both of our cars were wrecked on the last lap and next to last lap and it was by the 15 car (Bowyer). I have never hurt as bad in my life leaving the race track as I did that day. It took me a week or so to get over it just because we had it in our grasp. And that's just emotions that we carry and nobody else. So I think that situation, along with some other things that happened along the way, you know, you don't forget it."

Bowyer and Gordon spoke at the track that day, and Bowyer texted Hendrick after the race. The two drivers have had other on-track incidents between them this season, including another run-in at Martinsville last month, but they had a conversation after that, too.

But something made Gordon snap late in Sunday at Phoenix, when enough was finally enough when he and Bowyer got together. When Gordon retaliated, it mathematically eliminated Bowyer from championship contention, but Gordon said Bowyer has to accept responsibility for putting himself in that position.

"If you're contending for the championship, you've got to be as smart about the things you do on the race track as the guys that you're racing that might be outside the championship," Gordon said. "And there was absolutely no reason to run into me."

Bowyer was still angry Friday about the Phoenix incident and didn't want to discuss Gordon.

"I don't want to talk about it. I really don't," he said as he walked from pit road to his team hauler.

Asked how long it would take for him to get past his anger, Bowyer said he didn't know, "It'll be a while." And when told he's not one to usually hold a grudge, he replied, "I'm usually not a guy that usually causes any trouble, either."

The only thing Gordon feels badly about is Logano getting collected in the accident. He said he spoke to Logano on the phone and "I can't say it went exactly very well" and he'd like to follow-up at the track.

Logano agreed the call did not go well.

"I reached out for an apology and I didn't get one, and I got hung up on," Logano said. "But he did text me, and I'm sure we'll meet up at some point. We're going to be able to go out and figure it out. We're big boys."

As for what's next, Gordon doesn't know. But he understands the attention on the incident with Bowyer, and the effect it might have on the season finale.

"I would tune in the following Sunday and see what happens," he said.
