Digital clock made from twisting Lego towers

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

It's the latest Lego contraption: a clock that painstakingly twists to create a digital display.? Designed and built by inventor Hans Andersson, it uses the components of two Lego Mindstorms kits, as well as extra Lego Technic pieces. Behind the clockface, two microprocessors communicate via Bluetooth to control the display. The main computer keeps track of the time and arranges the minute digits, while the second device looks after the hour display and the second indicator.

To create each digit, five layers of white and black pieces are arranged in a specific pattern. Each layer can make a complete rotation thanks to a lug connecting it to the layer underneath. "By twisting the top layer back and forth in a specific sequence, it's possible to position all the layers to make a desired number appear," says Andersson.

The clock was designed and built over several months. Many people have contacted Andersson to ask for building instructions and he is now considering making them available. ?
