Y Kids Run Day is Saturday at Daffin Park

Saturday is the second annual Y Kids Run Celebration Day at Daffin Park.

?We will celebrate kids and their healthy habits at the second annual Y Kids Run Day, a day dedicated to the healthy and active kids in coastal Georgia,? Southside YMCA Executive Director Tommy Speidel said.

This event marks the end of the school year of the program, which began in September at the YMCA?S Heart of Savannah 5K.

The free event begins at 8:30 a.m. and will kick off with a 1-mile fun run. At 9 a.m., children in grades K?3 will start, followed by fourth grade and up at 9:30.

Upon completing the run, each participant receives a Y Kids Run award. After the awards, there will be family activities, Zumba?, inflatables, healthy snacks, face painting, food and more.

Even if a child has not been enrolled in the program throughout the year, it?s not too late for him or her to join in the event.

For more information or to preregister for the event, registration forms are available at local YMCA of Coastal Georgia branches, Fleet Feet Sports of Savannah or visit ymcaofcoastalga.org.

GSU promotes Corless to co-defensive coordinator

STATESBORO ? Kevin Corless, who joined the Georgia Southern football program as the assistant coach for linebackers, has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator, GSU head coach Jeff Monken announced Tuesday.

Corless reunited with longtime colleague and friend Jack Curtis on the Eagle defensive staff in January of 2012. The two have served as co-defensive coordinators for most of the last decade.

?I am thrilled to announce that Kevin Corless, our linebackers coach, is joining Jack Curtis as co-defensive coordinator,? said Monken. ?Jack and K.C. have worked together successfully in this role for several seasons at Northwestern State and Arkansas State. Over the past year, it has become apparent that this is a partnership that will benefit our team as well.?

Prior to joining Georgia Southern, Corless spent nine years as an assistant coach at Arkansas State, the first seven as co-defensive coordinator along with Curtis and the final two with sole responsibility as coordinator. In his tenure at ASU, where he also oversaw the linebackers and punt return unit, the Red Wolves defense finished among the Top 40 FBS programs in at least one defensive category each year.

Rivals.com named Corless the Sun Belt Defensive Coordinator of the Year for the accomplishments of his 2009 Red Wolves? defense. That season capped a four-year run that saw the defense claim either first or second in each of the league?s five major defense statistical categories. ASU finished the 2008 season ranked in the top 20 for redzone defense and tackles for loss, but it was an upset of Texas A&M that earned national attention as linebacker Ben Owens intercepted an Aggie pass late in the game for the win.

Corless started at Northwestern State as the defensive line coach in 1995 and was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 1999 with responsibilities for the Demon linebackers for his final three seasons in Natchitoches, La. Northwestern State captured two Southland Conference titles and made three NCAA FCS Playoff appearances.

A four-year letterman and all-conference linebacker, Corless graduated from Northwest Missouri State.

Oakland outfielder Reddick out with injury

CLEVELAND ? Oakland Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick is expected to be sidelined for a few days with a sore right wrist.

Reddick is out of Tuesday?s lineup against Cleveland and Oakland manager Bob Melvin says he will likely be unavailable for the remainder of the four-game series, which concludes Thursday.

Reddick has struggled this season, batting. 152, the third-lowest average in the American League. He?s also in a 3-for-27 slump in his last 10 games.

Reddick was a key member of Oakland?s drive to the AL West title last season when he batted .242 with 32 homers and 85 RBIs. He has one homer and 14 RBIs in 29 games this season. Michael Taylor is starting in right field against Cleveland.
